Expert Opinion

Although not market leading (it directly competes with two other German behemoths of car manufacturing), the A6 is a head turning choice in a class full of head turners. Bearing the Audi proviso for impeccable interiors, the A6 comes equipped with technology both incredibly sophisticated yet simple to use (Audi MMI, sat nav and a number of optional driver assist functions), while cabin size nears that of the class above it. The 2.0 TDi engine satisfies the need for power and efficiency, but for the more speed obsessed the performance of the 3.0 BiTDi V6 (0-62mph in 5.1 seconds), may prove more alluring.

About Audi A6

The big brother to the A4 and A5, the Audi A6 can sometimes struggle to be noticed in a market so heavily dominated by its German competitors. Yet the Audi A6 is a classy, solid and luxurious car which manages to hold its own against its more popular rivals.

Like all Audis, desirability is one its leading attractions, and in the A6, this is brought about from a good, refined ride, luxurious interior and surprisingly economic efficiency

Why buy a used A6?

Although the first Audi A6 was first brought onto the market in 1994, it was in fact a rebadged Audi 100, and so has its original roots in 1968. Launched to satisfy the need for a mid-sized executive vehicle, it signalled the start of Audi's success in the modern era.

Like BMW's 5 Series and the Mercedes' E Class, the A6 is a sizeable and luxurious car which offers a refined ride and comfortable cabin. As in many Audis, the latter of these traits stands out as class leading, bringing sophistication and luxury to their cars. Cabin space is surprisingly vast, matching (and in many cases surpassing), that of its competitors. Opt for the Avant estate trim and you are gifted with 565 litres of boot space with the seats up, and 1,680 folded down. Quality finishings and good equipment add to the sense of luxury in the cabin, while the Audi MMI system makes it both technologically modern as well as classically comfortable.

Predictably, the 2.0 diesel is the top seller, matching performance and economy for the best results within the A6 range, yet not quite matching the market leaders. But, where previous Audis might have never hoped to match the BMW's or Mercedes' performance, the most recent A6 comes very close. In the 2011, fourth generation car, 0-60 takes 8.9 seconds, but upgrading to the 3.0 litre BiTDi V6 diesel brings this down to a quick 5.1 seconds.

Returns are especially good for a car of its size, and is at its most efficient in the 2.0 TDi - the official figures promise 57.6mpg and 129g/km CO2 emissions. While impressive, these still fall slightly behind the class leaders, such as the Efficient Dynamic fitted BMW 5 Series.

Ride and handling are both good, especially the former, which with a revised suspension system in the newest generation puts it at the very top of its class. Being part of a market with such importance placed on being able to drive comfortably for long periods of time, having one of the best rides in its class is no mean feat. Luckily there is still a good level of grip, balance and spirit which gives it a lively drive, should you want to put a bit more in.

A strong performer in all categories, the Audi A6 is a competent mid-sized executive, which does well to compete with its rivals, yet doesn't always match up to them. The newest generation is a considerable step up in terms of quality and comfort however, and while A6s have always been good to look at, they are now, more than ever, good to drive too.

The first Audi A6 was released in 1994, but it has it roots back in 1968, when the mid-sized Audi 100 was first introduced.

Here is a short history of the Audi A6's life, starting right back in 1968.

The first Audi mid-sized executive car was released in 1968 and badged as the Audi 100. In 1994 this car was revised for its fourth generation (C4), renamed the A6, and introduced in 1994.
The second generation A6 (C5) was released in 1997, and was the first to be built on the Volkswagen Group C5 platform. This model was a considerable step up in quality.
2002 saw the A6 receive a facelift, revising the headlight and grille designs, as well as the exhaust and some body changes.
In 2004 a new generation, the C6 Typ 4F, was released, featuring a longer body and the Audi Multi Media Interface (MMI), a system which controlled the entertainment, climate control and other car settings such as suspension configurations.
In 2005 the Audi A6 was named World Car of the Year.
The fourth generation C7 A6 was introduced in 2011, and was heavily influenced by its more upmarket sibling the A8 in terms of looks, but shares an interior, platform and powertrain with the A7.
An A6 hybrid model was released in 2012, featuring a 2 litre TFSI engine and a 45 PS electric one.

What should I look for when buying a used A6?

Have a look over the exterior of the car for any signs of rust, corrosion or mismatched panels, which could be a sign of repair work or previous damage.
Check that the cam belt has been changed on Audis with substantial mileage. Audis no longer issue recommended cam belt changing intervals, but some dealers recommend replacing this after just 40,000 miles.
When starting the car, check that the engine management light comes on in the dashboard, but soon switches off. If the light stays on it could mean that the ignition coil pack is faulty - something more common on post-2001 cars.
On manual transmission cars, if there is a whining noise coming from the gear level when changing gear, this could mean that the release bearings need to be replaced.
Some Audis have reported problems with electric windows. Test these to make sure that these are in working order - if they are slow to open or sticky it could mean that the regulator is close to failing.
When driving over any bumps or small holes, listen for squeaks or creaks coming from the suspension. This could mean that the suspension arm or ball might need to be replaced.
