Expert Opinion

A crossover SUV which sits between the larger Q5 and the smaller Q7, the Q3 impresses with its compact-yet-confident nature, mixing ability and driving pleasure with good looks. The star engine of the range is, surprisingly, the weaker of three 2.0 litre turhocharged diesels, offering 138bhp, which is punchy and brisk without being overly raucous. Suspension and ride is good, which give the Audi a comfortable, clean drive through the city. Inside, the cabin is well groomed, with plenty of room for both passengers and luggage (460 litres, extending up to 1365 with rear seats pushed forward), and so while the Q3 might still trail some of its rivals (such as the Land Rover Evoque), it is one of the best crossover compact SUVs on the market.

About Audi Q3

Following the popularity of Audi’s Q7 and Q5 SUVs, Audi decided to launch a more affordable SUV with the Q3. It proved to be a very shrewd move, as it’s gone on to become one of Audi’s best-selling models since its introduction in 2011. Featuring a wide range of engines – including efficient front-wheel-drive options – it also boasted a new MMI navigation system at the time. Updates would soon follow – including with a powerful RSQ3 model – while a notable 2015 facelift brought a refreshed design, new LED headlights and more fuel efficient engines.

Audi would launch its second-generation Q3 right at the end of 2018. This brought with it a far more modern design – inspired by models like the new flagship Q8 SUV – while getting an updated interior thanks to a large touchscreen and digital dials both fitted as standard. A year later Audi introduced a sleeker Sportback model with coupe-like styling, while a plug-in hybrid joined the line-up in 2021.

Why buy a used Q3?

The premium compact SUV segment is one of the most competitive markets, but one area that really sets the Audi Q3 apart is the quality of its interior. Whether you’re buying one of the earliest used examples or a virtually brand-new example, its cabin is brimmed with high quality materials that truly feel built to last. Like the majority of Audis, the Q3 also has an almost timeless look about it, and doesn’t age like plenty of rivals in this class.

It’s also an ideal family car thanks to its spacious interior. Though you’ll need the Q7 if you want seven seats, the Q3 still offers plenty of rear seat room even for taller adults, while the boot across both generations is generous – measuring 420 litres on first generation cars and 530 litres on the latest model. Sliding rear seats are also a standard feature on models from 2019 onwards.

Elsewhere, the Q3 is rather good to drive too. Though not the sportiest model in this class, it perfectly bridges the gap between having a sharp driving experience and comfort, and it would be great to live with on a day-to-day basis. It’s also accompanied by a great range of petrol and diesel engines, which deliver strong performance across the board. Many models also come with Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system, though front-wheel-drive cars are available if you’re looking for something more efficient.

The latest car is also available as a plug-in hybrid, which packs 242bhp as part of its petrol-electric setup, while also being able to travel for a claimed 31 miles on electricity. It could be an ideal option if you mainly drive short distances and are able to plug in at home.

And though the regular Q3 is far from being an attractive design, you can add extra style to it by going for a ‘Sportback’ model, which offers a more rakish rear end, yet with minimal expense of interior space.

Q3 updates

Here’s a short history of the Audi Q3, which was first introduced in 2011.

Audi pulled the covers off its new Q3 at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show as its most compact SUV at the time, yet offering the same quality and technology expected from all its models. First models reached showrooms at the end of 2011.
Audi launched a sportier RS Q3 in 2013, which was importantly the brand’s first ever RS-badged SUV.
The first-generation Q3 was revised in 2015, bringing with it more equipment and fresher styling. More efficient engines were also launched, while the RS Q3 got an added burst of power.
The second-generation Q3 debuted in 2018, bringing with a far more design interior and an all-new interior incorporating a large new touchscreen and digital dials as standard. It’s also roomier and is available with a range of new driver assistance technology.
A more stylish Sportback model was launched in 2019, introducing ‘coupe’ styling to the range.
For 2021, Audi launched a new plug-in hybrid option for the first time. It’s available across both body styles.

Which used Q3 should I buy?

Audi has chopped and changed the Q3’s line-up since its introduction in 2011. These are, however, the main trim levels to look out for, which focus on the equipment included on the latest cars.

What should I look for when buying a used Q3?

Some find the sports suspension on S line cars a touch too firm, so it’s worth test driving one to make sure you don’t find it uncomfortable.
Many owners of first generation Q3s complained that the petrol engine is a lot thirstier on fuel than its figures suggested, so factor in you might be spending more time at the pumps.
Diesel cars are fitted with a particulate filter (DPF) that is only able to work when the car is up to temperature and at higher speeds. SO be cautious of any diesel examples with especially low mileage as they might not be as appealing as you think they are at first.
