Expert Opinion

As the smaller sibling to the Audi Q7, the Q5 is far better suited to constrained UK roads than its sizeable brother. But, while it might not be quite as expansive as the Q7, it is no Smart car, and inside it is well-finished, and boasts a top spec interior that is both incredibly comfortable and spacious. Inside it might have the space and finishings of a car far larger than it actually is, but on the road it handles like a smaller, more agile saloon. Its ride isn't the best in its class, and there's little joy to be had from it off road, but in the compact SUV class it is one of the most comfortable and sophisticated on the road.

About Audi Q5

Recognising just how popular SUVs were proving, Audi expanded its range with the Q5 in 2008 – a mid-size model rivalling the BMW X3, and slotting beneath the Q7 in the brand’s line-up. Bringing a high-quality interior, classy image and comfortable driving experience, it soon became a popular choice.

A second-generation version arrived in 2017, bringing a classier design, new multimedia system and greater interior space. The range expanded with a plug-in hybrid version in 2019, while in 2021 Audi introduced a second bodystyle – the Sportback, which offers sleeker styling. This is a direct rival to the Mercedes GLC Coupe.

Why buy a used Q5?

Premium family SUVs don’t get much better than the Q5, and providing you don't need seven seats, it really is a complete package.

A particular highlight is its interior, which is most certainly up to the high standards we’re used to from Audi. Combining high-quality materials throughout, the Q5 also comes with a large touchscreen and digital dials as standard on newer models, both of which offer super-sharp graphics and a great degree of customisability.

You also get a long list of equipment for the money, as on top of the aforementioned dual screens, the Q5 also comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a full suite of LED lighting, heated seats, wireless phone charging and a reversing camera.

Out on the road, the Q5 takes a more comfortable approach than rivals like the BMW X3 and Jaguar F-Pace, which instead favour sportiness. With its supple ride, particularly on the standard Sport cars, which use a softer suspension setup and smaller alloy wheels, it’s a particularly comfortable model and ideal for longer trips and commuting in.

There’s also a superb range of strong powertrains available, including powerful petrol and diesel options, as well as a choice of plug-in hybrids, known as the 50 TFSI e and 55 TFSI e. While the PHEV model could only initially travel around 25 miles on electric, Audi has more recently kitted it out with a larger battery, which makes it capable of more than 40 miles in EV mode.

Meanwhile if you want something a little sportier, there is the SQ5. Audi has flip-flopped between diesel and petrol power for this model, but it now uses a powerful 336bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, which lets this SUV sprint to 60mph in just five seconds. However, its diesel engine is still quite efficient, with Audi claiming up to 35mpg if you drive it more carefully.

Q5 updates

Here’s a short history of the Q5, which was first introduced in 2008.

Audi unveiled its Q5 in April 2008 as the brand’s second SUV, slotting beneath the Q7 in the brand’s range. Offering strong engines, a spacious interior and a sure-footed drive, it soon became a hit.
A revised model hit showrooms in 2012, bringing revised and new engines, dynamic tweaks and various new connected and tech features.
Also in 2012 Audi introduced its sportier SQ5, which was not only the brand’s first performance SUV but also its first sports model to feature a diesel engine.
A second-generation Q5 arrived in 2017, offering a range of new in-car tech and safety features, along with greater interior space and a smarter design.
In 2019 Audi launched a new plug-in hybrid version of the Q5, offering a 26-mile electric range to help reduce running costs, while also appealing to company car drivers.
A redesigned Q5 followed in 2020, bringing a tweaked look, more technology and a larger multimedia screen. A sleeker coupe-styled Sportback version was also introduced at a similar time, sitting alongside the more conventional SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used Q5?

Higher-spec models come with large diamond-cut alloy wheels. Look out for any signs of damage, as these can be expensive if they need repairing or refurbishing.
Paint can flake off around the wheel arches if cars are jet washed regularly, which could cause corrosion further down the line. Inspect the arches closely for signs of this.
Automatic gearboxes can be a bit problematic on older cars, so look out for any signs of jerkiness or hesitancy as this could point towards problems.
