The Citroen C1 was launched in 2005 along with the jointly produced Toyota AYGO and Peugeot 107. Sharing much of its specifications with these two sibling cars, it might not exactly be unique, but the C1 manages to hold an edge with its handling, nipping in and out of traffic with undeniable ease. Like many in the city car class, run costs are very low - emissions fall under 100g/km and so it is road tax exempt, while returns near 70mpg. City driving in general might not always be the most exciting, but the C1 certainly makes the most of what life there is to be had.

Launched at a time when there was a strong demand for low-cost motoring, the C1 went on sale in 2005 alongside the Peugeot 107 (its since known as the 108) and Toyota Aygo, with a frugal 1.0-litre petrol engine and the option of three- and five-door bodystyles. It’s proven a big hit for Citroen, and a big hit with new drivers or just those seeking an affordable urban runabout.

A second-generation version arrived in 2014, bringing a more modern and stylish design, fun personalisation options and a more up-to-date interior.

Why buy a used C1?

Top of the reasons why you should consider a Citroen C1 is its affordability. New versions are among some of the most affordable cars on the roads, so it’s no surprise used versions stack up well too. Used versions start from as little as £1,000 for older cars, while low insurance group ratings make it ideal for new drivers looking for their first wheels. Its small 1.0-litre petrol engine is also brilliantly frugal, with Citroen claiming it will return around 60mpg. If you’re looking to keep costs down, both in terms of buying and running a car, it’s certainly worth considering.

The C1 is absolutely fantastic around town too, with its small dimensions making parking an absolute breeze. Top-spec versions also come with a rear-view camera that’s ideal if you regularly have to park in small gaps, while good visibility means you’ll be able to see plenty around you.

Here’s a short history of the Citroen C1, which has been around since 2005.

Citroen launched the C1 as its new entry-level city car. It’s a sibling car to the Peugeot 107/8 and Toyota Aygo, and remains so to this date.
The C1 was updated in 2009, gaining a new-look grille, additional colours and a revised trim level range. A second facelift arrived in 2014, bringing lower running costs, LED daytime running lights and the option of Bluetooth.
After more than 760,000 first-generation C1s had been sold, Citroen introduced its second version in 2014. It offered fun new styling, a new touchscreen and a fresh focus on comfort. A range of special editions have been launched since then, though there haven’t really been any major updates aside from new trims and colour options.

What should I look for when buying a used C1?

7-inch touchscreen is not compatible with all phones, so check that you can connect to it (both with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto).
Low interior quality – as to be expected on an inexpensive car – can get damaged and worn quite easily, so make sure no trim is missing or loose.
As with any convertible, check the C1’s fabric roof opens and closes smoothly and without issue.
