About Citroen C4

Citroen has a well-proven history in the family hatchback segment, with previous models competing in this area including the ZX and Xsara. But in 2004 it saw the arrival of the C4 - a funky, modern hatch that quickly made waves for its striking design and innovative features, including a built-in air freshener and laminated glass.

A second-generation C4 arrived in 2011 as a slightly more sedate version, though still prioritising design and value for money. After a number of years on sale, Citroen axed the car in the UK in 2018. It wasn't until 2021 that it made a comeback. Featuring a new SUV-inspired design, the C4 benefitted from the French firm's 'Advanced Comfort' programme, while also introducing the e-C4 EV as part of Citroen's growing electrified line-up.

Why buy a used C4?

Perhaps the ultimate reason to choose the C4 is for just how comfortable it is. It introduced a new stage of Citroen's 'Advanced Comfort' programme, and features an innovative suspension setup that offers an exceptionally supple ride. Higher spec models also get thicker seats, offering enhanced support, and they're ideal for those that suffer from back pain or struggle to get comfortable in a car.

Regardless of which C4 you choose, it offers plenty of style and a fun and funky design that helps to set it apart from plainer rivals such as the Ford Focus and Hyundai i30. The latest model is particularly appealing, with its raised suspension and chunky plastic cladding making it look more like an SUV, and it's going down well with buyers who like this more rugged styling. The coupe-like sloping roofline is another highlight, as is the fact all versions (regardless of trim level) come with large 18-inch alloy wheels.

On top of this, the level of equipment offered on the C4 is seriously impressive, particularly considering its attractively low used prices. Regardless of which trim level you go for, kit on the latest versions includes a large 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, along with dual-zone climate control and automatic LED headlights.

The choice of powertrains on offer is another real highlight, with the C4 being available with a choice of punchy petrol engines, an efficient diesel and also as an EV. It's the latter that's the star of the show, and remains quite a rarity in this class. Bringing no compromise in practicality, this model is also able to travel for up to a claimed 219 miles on a charge, while 100kW rapid charging capability means the battery can be charged to 80 per cent in as little as 30 minutes.

C4 updates

Here's a short history of the Citroen C4, which dates back to 2004.

Citroen unveiled the C4 in September 2004 as its new family hatchback. Available as both a 5-door and 3-door coupe, it boasted a smart new design and modern-feeling digital instrument panel.
The model was updated in 2008, gaining new engines, updated styling and additional tech.
A second-generation C4 arrived on sale in 2011, boasting smart new styling, greater interior space and a greater focus on quality.
A 2015 update to it introduced new LED lighting, a new 7-inch touchscreen and improved comfort. This model remained on sale until 2018.
After a short gap, the C4 returned in 2021 for a third outing. With an improved focus on design and comfort, an electric e-C4 version was also introduced alongside petrol and diesel models.

What should I look for when buying a used C4?

The EGS semi-automatic gearbox isn't known for its reliability, though it's still jerky even when driven normally.
Paint blistering on the C4's bonnet is quite common, and repainting the area doesn't always improve the problem.
