Expert Opinion

While the original Punto sort of ceased production in 2010 (which means they're often out there at excellent prices), the Grande Punto, launched in 2005, is a worthy successor/replacement. Called Grande Punto between 2005-09, Punto Evo between 2009-12 and since 2012 the Punto, whatever its name, the newer Punto is cheap to run, easy to drive, incredibly manoeuvrable and ultra smooth, particularly the 1.4 Multi Air petrol engine. As one of the larger superminis, the Punto really is top of the class when it comes to space - four adults and their cases can be well accommodated. If you?ve got a slightly larger family, the five door Punto is practical for the road and the finances.

About Fiat Punto

First released in 1993 and now into its third generation, the Fiat Punto is a compact supermini which continues the stylish Italian manufacturer's reputation for good looking, fun cars, but adds practicality and low run costs.

The supermini class has become increasingly competitive over the last decade, but the Fiat Punto remains a contender with surprising practicality, good value and, with the new MultiAir technology, efficient as well. It might not be quite as desirable as the class best, but it is a competent alternative.

Why buy a used Punto?

The Punto is at its best when in the city, where its sharp handling, compact size and easy manoeuvrability makes it both easy to control and well-suited to the tight spaces and congestion of urban environments. At higher speeds it isn't quite as competent - especially heading around corners, where there can be considerable body roll - but its ride is calm while the brakes are sharp.

Under the bonnet there is little to give the compact Punto much in the way of rubber-burning power, but the latest generation does boast a selection of incredibly efficient and competent engines. The 1.3 litre MultiJet option offers impressive returns of between 70 and 80mpg, and tax-dodging emissions of under 100g/km. Even the 1.4 litre petrol engine manages returns of 50mpg, which makes the Punto a particularly affordable option among strong competition.

There's plenty of available storage space inside the cabin and boot, and despite the 275 litre boot not offering quite as much room as its rivals do, its 1,030 litres total storage space (with rear seats folded down), gives it a competitive edge over its less versatile contemporaries. Plenty of storage and cubby holes extend the available room, while solid materials and good equipment levels (higher spec models features a clever Bluetooth connectivity system, while air con and alloys are all offered as standard) make excellent value for money.

The Punto isn't quite as fun to drive as the class leaders such as the Ford Fiesta, nor as cute or dynamic as its smaller sibling the Fiat 500, but it competes with the best of its class in terms of run costs and practicality. Added to its sharp style, nippy character (with the right engine), this makes the Punto a supermini for those looking for sensibility with a bit of fun.

Punto updates

Fiat Punto

The first Fiat Punto was launched in 1993 as the replacement for the Uno, and is now in its third generation.

Here is a short history of the Fiat Punto, starting with its launch in 1993.
  • The first Fiat Punto was released in 1993 and was the replacement for the outgoing Fiat Uno.
  • In 1995 it was named as the European Car of the Year, beating stiff competition from the Volkswagen Polo.
  • The second generation Punto was released in 1999 and featured the same styling but a completely overhauled chassis and interior.
  • The 5,000,000th production Punto was rolled out in 2003. Later that year it was given a facelift involving a few minor safety revisions.
  • At the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show the third generation Punto was released and named the Grande Punto.
  • In 2009 the Grand Punto was given a facelift and renamed the Punto Evo. The new model received a revised front end, interior and rear lights.
  • In 2012 the Evo and Grande titles were dropped in favour of the original Punto name.

What should I look for when buying a used Punto?

What to look for in a Fiat Punto
  • Some Puntos have suffered from failing door hinges, so make sure to check that these are in working order. Open and close the doors to check whether they do so without error. If they have to be lifted to close properly the hinges have started failing and will need to be replaced.
  • Check that cam belts have been changed on schedule (every 36,000 miles), If it hasn't and it breaks it could be very expensive to fix, especially on 1.4 Mk1, 1.4 and 16V MK2 models.
  • When out on a test drive check that there is smooth acceleration and no delay of power when pushing the accelerator. If there is, it could mean that the clutch is failing and will need to be repaired.
  • Similarly, a clutch noise coming from the pedal when pushed could also be a sign of a failing part, and will need costly repair work.
  • With the car on, listen for a whining noise. If it exists, but disappears once the clutch is depressed it could be a sign of a faulty gearbox.
  • If the car's nose dips considerably when driving over bumps (or if there is a lot of noise and an uncomfortable ride) the shock absorbers may be failing and will need to be replaced.
  • Leave the car parked for 10 minutes after a test drive and then check underneath for any water drops. Any leaks could lead to trouble with the head gasket, which has weak spots and could be damaged if driving with low water levels.
  • If there are signs of oil leaking under the car it could be a sign of the sumps rusting. This will need to be repaired or could lead to major problems.
