Expert Opinion

The Ford Puma is a three door sports coupé which, since its launch in 1997, has found itself in near-constant demand due to its fun handling, sleek design and affordable price and costs. Featuring front wheel drive and either a 1.4 or 1.7 (which is arguably the better of the two) litre engine, the Puma is a joy to drive. It hits a top speed of 126mph while 0-62mph takes just under eight seconds. Handling is tight and sharp (being developed by a team which included Jackie Stewart no doubt had an influential hand in this), which, along with its refined and comfortable ride, make it one of the best small coupés available. Which might explain why they're often so hard to come by.

About Ford Puma

Though many might remember the Puma as a small coupe from the early noughties, Ford decided to revive the nameplate in 2019 for its new small crossover. Based on the Fiesta, it launched with efficient mild-hybrid powertrains, smart styling and a focus on interior space – not least with its cool ‘MegaBox’ boot.

Ford expanded the range with more upmarket Vignale versions soon after launch, while a sporty Puma ST debuted in 2020 – using the same engine from the excellent Fiesta ST hot hatch.

Why buy a used Puma?

In a very competitive market, the Ford Puma is more than able to hold its own, and is without question one of the best compact crossovers on the market.

High up on the reasons to choose it is for its fun driving experience. This isn’t an area cars in this segment excel in, but thanks to the Puma’s Fiesta-based underpinnings, it’s able to feel nimble, agile and rather enjoyable on a good road, even in standard guise. You can also take things up a notch with the full-fat Puma ST model – which uses a 197bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which allows for a 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds.

Yet the Puma is still an efficient choice, with its 48-volt 1.0-litre petrol mild-hybrid petrol engines (fitted to the rest of the range) able to return very good fuel economy figures. Ford claims up to 52.3mpg, which is among the best efficiency figures you’ll see for any petrol that isn’t a full-hybrid in this class. At the same time, these engines – despite quite a small capacity – feel willing and deliver peppy performance if required.

At the same time the Puma is still a practical choice, and if you’re looking for a crossover like this because a regular supermini is just too small, it’s ideal. There’s a lot more space in the rear than the Fiesta, while its 456-litre boot is a great size for a car of this class. It also has a special trick up its sleeve, with its ‘MegaBox’, essentially a plastic container beneath the boot floor that extends the capacity, and is wipe clean, so is ideal for storing muddy boots in.

Puma updates

Here’s a short history of the Ford Puma, which dates back to 2019.

Ford revealed the Puma in September 2019, joining the Ecosport and Kuga in its SUV range. It boasted new mild-hybrid engines, a smart design and plenty of technology.
In June 2020, Ford expanded the Puma range with a new more upmarket ST-Line Vignale model, along with the addition of an automatic transmission.
Later in 2020 Ford debuted its sporty ST model – using the same engine and underpinnings as the Fiesta ST hot hatch.
Upgrades for 2021 included a mild-hybrid automatic model (previously you couldn’t have this gearbox with electrification), along with a funky ST Gold Edition, limited to 999 units.
