Expert Opinion

The enduring light commercial vehicle of British industry, the Ford Transit is the number one choice of white van men across the country. But having been produced for over forty years, there's a lot more versatility in the Transit than many expect. Driving like a passenger car and coming in a range of different variations such as the Pitt-Jolie-family sized Tourneo Custom people mover, the uses of the Transit extend beyond just lugging equipment from one site to another. Of course, it's in this exercise which it really excels, and with the Ford Transit Custom being named International Van of the Year 2013, it is a car which is consistently going from strength to strength.

About Ford Transit

Few vehicles have had as enduring a legacy as the Ford Transit. Five decades since its release it remains one of the most popular vans on British roads. The reason for its popularity is simple – it has managed to be a consistently excellent performer for the 50 years it has been in production.

Spacious, powerful, but surprisingly fun to drive, it has more competition on the market than ever before. But, its monopoly remains, simply for the fact that it is still one of the best panel vans available.

Why buy a used Transit?

When the first true Ford Transit was released in 1965 it began a revolution in the van industry. No longer were vans large, cumbersome and a despair to drive. Now they were car-like, quick and manoeuvrable, but with all the workhorse ability of a good van. Since then the Transit has remained fiercely popular. More than two million of them have been sold and more than 700,000 remain on the roads today. In fact, it's Ford's third best selling model behind the Fiesta and the Focus.

The van car class has come a long way in the way of refinement since its rough and ready early days. The same is true for the Transit. Today, it hasn't lost its abilities as a true workhorse, but the variety on offer is a far cry from the simplicity of the early model. There are now more than 450 different variations beyond the simple base model, ranging from minibuses to panel vans.

What this means is that there is something on offer to suit every need. The Transit Connect, for example, is a compact van designed for use in cities and can pack in five people and leave room for some serious luggage.

The Transit has come a long way in terms of comfort, too. The cabins on today's models borrow heavily from Ford's passenger cars and feature all the trip computers, Bluetooth and durable features that you'd expect in cars like the Fiesta or Focus. Rivals like the Mercedes Sprinter might have historically had a slight advantage in terms of interior trim, but newer model Transits easily match the German manufacturer's sophistication.

In the most recent model there are engine choices that offer rugged ability, but good refinement, too. The 2.2 TDCi diesel in the 2015 provides plenty of power and torque, but surprisingly offers little in the way of cabin noise. Efficiency too, is competitive – the Econetic model averages 44.1mpg. On the road Transits are surprisingly nimble, with good handling, a tight turning circle and a very little lean on sharp bends. Much work has been done in recent years to improve refinement so that the more modern Transits are excellent motorway cruisers, too.

But above all, the Transit is a vehicle that needs to offer practicality – and that it does. Load area in modern models extends all the way up to 15.1 cubic metres, which although a little way behind some rival panel vans, does offer more than enough for most tasks. Helpfully, the load doors have been made larger to ease loading and unloading by forklift.

Given their popularity, used Ford Transits are normally in high supply, meaning you can pick up a well maintained offering on the used panel van market with a bit of searching.

Transit updates

Ford Transit

The Ford Transit has been one of the most popular vans in the UK ever since its release in 1965.

Here's a short history of the Ford Transit, starting in 1965
  • The first model to wear the "Transit" tag was first released in 1961. This was the Ford Taunus Transit, a van built in Germany. It wasn't until later, when this model was discontinued that the Transit truly came into its own.
  • In 1965 the Transit Mark I was released in the UK. It was manufactured in the UK and was designed to take over from the Thames 400E, a small mid-engine van.
  • In 1972 the Ford Transit was named the "most wanted van" by Metropolitan police, with the force stating that in 95% of bank raids a Ford Transit was used.
  • It wasn't until 1978 that the second generation Transit was released. Commonly known as the Transit Mark II, it was largely a facelift of the original car and came in six body types: Van, Kombi, Chassis Cab, Parcel Van, Bus and Crewbus.
  • The Transit Clubmobil was released in 1981 for mainland Europe only, and featured a custom interior with swivel seats in velour, pile carpet and 14'' alloy wheels.
  • 1986 saw the launch of the third generation Transit with a completely new bodyshell using the "one-box" design.
  • A major facelift in 1994 gave the Transit a new dashboard and nose. A year later, in 1995, Ford released a 30th anniversary edition called the Transit Hallmark – only six hundred were made.
  • The fourth generation Transit was released in 2000, again featuring a new look and both rear- and front-wheel-drive. New petrol engines meant that this generation could reach a top speed of 93 mph.
  • In 2001 the fourth generation Ford Transit was named International Van of the Year.
  • The five millionth Transit was produced in Southampton in July 2005. This van was donated to charity.
  • 2013 saw the fifth generation Transit launched and production of all Transits move from Southampton - where it had been ongoing since 1965 - to Turkey, where it continues today.

What should I look for when buying a used Transit?

What to look for in a Ford Transit
  • Keep a keen eye out for these and you'll be sure to find a used Ford Transit that's well worth the money.
  • Do a thorough check of the exterior of the vehicle, paying special attention to the wheel arches. Some Transits have had rust problems in the past, so make sure you keep a keen eye.
  • Gear change cables in some early 00s model have been reported as faulty. When on a test drive make sure each gear change is smooth and consistent. If it's difficult to change between them there may be a problem with this.
  • When you take it out on a test drive, check for any black smoke that comes from the exhaust when you start up. This could mean engine trouble and potentially costly repairs.
  • Ford Transits are working vehicles. So, when checking a used Transit be diligent in checking for wear and tear – scratches on the exterior, scuffs on the upholstery, dents in panels. All are par for the course on workhorses like Transits, but be clear before you go out to look at one how much wear and tear you will put up with.
  • Listen out for a rattling on the road when accelerating. On some Transits this could mean the clutch and flywheel may need replacing.
  • When idling keep an ear out for a loud rattling. Some Transits have reported this, which could mean the timing chain is on its last legs.
