Expert Opinion

Celebrating its tenth birthday in 2012, the Jazz has grown to become a much-loved super-mini for over a million British drivers. The design has remained current and modern on both the first (02-08) and second generations (08-present), containing engines that are incredibly cheap to run, exceptionally roomy and fun to drive. That roominess extends to the 400 litre boot space – the unique rear seat-tipping mechanism allowing space aplenty. Oh - and there are loads of cubby holes dotted around the interior, practicality everywhere. A city car in spirit it may be with its turning circle, nippy engine and urban economy, but the 1.2l and 1.4l petrol engines are easily powerful enough to offer comfort on the motorway. Look out for the Hybrid version that offers zero road tax and 62.8mpg.

About Honda Jazz

Although first introduced for a limited time in Europe in 1982, the modern Honda Jazz has only been around since 2001, when it was relaunched, proving to be an instant hit.

A mix of affordability, efficiency and space, the Jazz has remained popular over its history with buyers looking for a car which is strong in all areas. A market leader with regards to the amount of space that it packs into its small frame, the Honda Jazz is one of the best family-friendly small cars on the market.

Why buy a used Jazz?

Known to be efficient and above all reliable, Hondas are cars which are renowned for being well put together. Introducing the Jazz then, was a decided move towards offering a car which offers practicality and versatility, as well as a competent drive.

Arguably its most attractive figure is the interior space it offers. With a petrol tank underneath the front seats the rear luggage space is ample and more roomy than its rivals in the supermini class (399 litres luggage space in the newer models). The Jazz interior has received praise for its simple design too, which favours a far more straightforward and practical layout than the Civic.

While this makes the Jazz an altogether very practical car, its drive and performance has been said to be a little underwhelming, if very reliable. For those that do want a bit more life, the Si model is tweaked to offer better handling and suspension. That said however, the 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engine newer model Jazzes, do offer 90bhp and 100bhp respectively, which is arguably enough get up and go for a supermini of its class.

Fuel efficiency and running costs of the Jazz are average, with the petrol engine models offering fuel consumption between 50mpg and 35mpg depending on the amount of weight in the car. With CO2 emissions between 120 and 130g/km, the petrol engines sit within VED band D, but high reliability, and therefore low maintenance costs, means that the Jazz is an altogether cheap car to run, especially in the long run. The hybrid version does improve fuel efficiency, but unfortunately doesn't fall under the 100g/km emission threshold to qualify it as exempt from road tax.

Safety in the Honda Jazz is assured, having scored the maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, and models come equipped with six airbags and anti-whiplash head restraints. Coupled with its reliability and spacious interior, it is positioned as a near perfect family car, but is similarly suited to someone looking for a simple and affordable, A to B, car.

A success since it was first introduced to motorists, the Honda Jazz has topped customer satisfaction lists for years.

Here's a short history of the Honda Jazz, starting from its very first arrival in 1982.

Launched for a brief time in 1982 (known as the Honda City outside of Europe), the Jazz was withdraw in 1986 and relaunched first in Japan in 2001, and then in Europe in 2002.
It proved popular almost immediately, outselling the Toyota Corolla by the end of 2001, leading the sales charts for nine months out of the next twelve.
In 2006 the Jazz was voted the second best vehicle on UK roads in a Top Gear survey.
That same year Car and Driver placed the Jazz first in a comparison of seven economy cars including the Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris.
A second generation Jazz was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007, boasting bigger interior space and an improved ride and handling.
A Jazz Hybrid was produced in Japan in 2010 under its Asian name (Honda Fit), and then later in Europe at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

What should I look for when buying a used Jazz?

Have a walk around the outside of the car checking for rust, corrosion and any quick cosmetic repair work. Corrosion isn't common on the Jazz, so this could be a sign of a poor repair job.
It being such a popular choice for families, check the interior to check whether there are noticeable signs of wear and tear from children and young families.
Some owners have complained about a leaky boot, so its worth checking that there are no noticeable stains in the boot interior that could indicate this is the case on your Jazz.
When you take it out for a test drive check whether the CVT transmission shudders when you accelerate or is slow to respond when putting it into reverse. If it does it could mean a serious problem brewing.
When starting the engine listen for any noises, such as a rattle, which could mean the cam chain might need to be adjusted.
There have been concerns over the noise generated by rear wheel-bearings in some cars, so it might be worth driving with the window open and radio off to check whether the noise level is acceptable.
Electrical problems are uncommon in the Jazz, but it's worth checking to see all lights, radio and warning lights are working regardless.
With a good reliability record, the Jazz is a strong all-round car. If it has a good service record and there are no noticeable flaws, its likely to be a relatively safe bet.
