Some of the best ideas happen where you’d least expect them and in the case of new brand Ineos, the idea for its no-nonsense 4x4 started over a pint in a pub.

Intended to serve as a modern-day replacement for the original Land Rover Defender, it was engineered to be tough, with a traditional steel ladder chassis, locking differentials and general rough-and-ready approach that meant people wouldn’t be afraid to take their 4x4 off-road – and where it was intended.

The idea for the Ineos Grenadier came about in 2017, and three years later the firm presented the design of its upcoming 4x4, though various delays meant production versions wouldn’t materialise until 2023. But Ineos stuck to its original focus of making the Grenadier a rugged, uncompromising 4x4, and it’s managed to be just that. The Grenadier comes in various guises, including a commercial model, while a pick-up is also on the way.

There’s only a small number of used Ineos models for sale, but expect this to grow over the coming months and years.

Used INEOS Cars Overview

The idea behind Ineos Automotive came from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the man behind the giant petrochemicals company, Ineos. Ratcliffe is – at the time of writing – the second richest person in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

When Land Rover ended production of the original Land Rover Defender, Ratcliffe sought to buy the design rights and production line tooling to keep building it, but the firm refused.

It lead to Ratcliffe wanting to produce his own 4x4, named the Grenadier after the Knightsbridge pub that the idea was thought of in. Originally meant to be produced in Wales, Ineos changed its mind and instead would buy the factory in Hambach, France, where the Smart car was originally produced.

Ineos would seek the help of others when developing the Grenadier, using experienced engineering firm Magna while using BMW engines for its 4x4s. The design of the Grenadier was first shown in July 2020 but the production model wouldn’t arrive until 2023. Ineos has followed up the standard Grenadier with a pick-up known as the Quartermaster, while it continues to explore hydrogen.

Further Ineos models are also planned for the future, including a smaller electric 4x4 in 2026.
