Arriving in dealers in 2016, it was Jaguar’s first SUV, and as a testament to its success, is now the British brand’s best-selling model. Alongside more conventional petrol and diesel engines, you can also choose it as a plug-in hybrid if you fancy lower running costs, while at the opposite end of the spectrum, the SVR delivers huge driving thrills and monstrous performance from its V8 engine.

For a manufacturer so well-versed in sports cars and saloons, it’s no surprise to say that it was a shock when Jaguar officially announced its first SUV. It’s a testament to just how big this segment is these days, especially when you consider that the brand itself is twinned with Land Rover, which only sells SUVs. So the F-Pace arrived in dealers in 2016, bringing glamour and sportiness to a market where both of those things were primarily absent.

Almost an immediate hit, it helped Jaguar to launch further SUVs with the smaller E-Pace and electric I-Pace, while a significant 2021 facelift saw the introduction of a plug-in hybrid and much-improved in-car technology.

Why buy a used F-Pace?

Given the F-Pace sits in one of the most competitive segments on the new car market – mid-size premium SUVs – Jaguar really had to do plenty to make its option stand out from the best. And it won’t leave you disappointed.

High up on the list of why you should choose the F-Pace is for the way it drives. While Jaguar could have used a readily-available platform from Land Rover, it instead started from scratch. The result is superb, with the F-Pace handling far more like a saloon car than a large SUV, while there’s plenty of grip and very little in the way of body roll. Its gearboxes are also excellent, while the ride is impressively comfortable – more so on cars fitted with smaller wheels.

And though looks are always subjective, we reckon Jaguar has successfully managed to inject some glamour into this segment with the F-Pace’s sharp LED lighting, prominent – but not over-the-top – grille and its almost coupe-like profile. You can also make it look sportier by going for an R-Dynamic version, which adds a more aggressive styling kit both inside and out.

There’s also a superb range of powertrains available, from efficient diesels capable of returning up to 45mpg to the monstrous SVR model, which is able to go from 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds. There really is something to suit most, and that even includes a plug-in hybrid that’s able to travel on electric for up to 33 miles. Charge regularly and do many miles on electricity and there’s scope for some impressively low running costs – Jaguar claims 130mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 130g/km.

Importantly, the F-Pace doesn’t forget about the need for an SUV to be practical, either. Though a strict five-seater (Jaguar doesn’t offer a model with seven seats), there will still be more than enough room for most family needs. There’s loads or rear seat space – even for taller passengers – while the boot measures up to an impressive 650 litres.

F-Pace updates

Here’s a short history of the Jaguar F-Pace, which dates back to 2015.

After years of suspense, Jaguar revealed the F-Pace as its first SUV in September 2015, just ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show. It reached showrooms in 2016 and soon scooped a number of high-profile awards.
In 2017 Jaguar introduced a range of new ‘Ingenium’ petrol and diesel engines, offering greater performance and efficiency.
In 2019 Jaguar introduced a performance SVR version – using the same 542bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine that you get in the brand’s F-Type sports car.
In 2021 the F-Pace was updated, with Jaguar giving the model a much-improved infotainment system, plusher cabin quality and also gaining a plug-in hybrid model for the first time.

What should I look for when buying a used F-Pace?

The F-Pace is primarily made from aluminium, which can be costly to sort if it has any dings or dents. The paint finish and panel gaps have also been criticised by some.
Listen out for any noises from the rear suspension, and be aware of any cars that do make any knocks or bangs.
The infotainment system is prone to glitches, so be sure to check that everything on the touchscreen works as it should.
