A very British take on an electric SUV, Jaguar’s first electric car – I-Pace – is a very worthy alternative to the big Tesla Model X SUV, the only real car of this type before this battery-powered Jag arrived. Melting a sporty drive with strong performance, fabulous styling and a luxurious interior, this is a fantastic SUV that just so happens to be electric. With this British brand recently announcing it would go EV-only by 2025, the I-Pace is a fantastic sign of things to come.

About Jaguar I-PACE

As we head towards an electric future, manufacturers are having to adapt and change like never before. Take Jaguar – a brand renowned for its petrol sporting models – which since 2018 has sold the I-Pace, a distinctive electric SUV.

It remains true to Jaguars of the past, though, with distinctive styling, a sporty driving experience and upmarket cabin, and will feel somewhat familiar to any existing owner of one of the brand’s models.

Why buy a used I-PACE?

Electric cars really don’t come much more convincing than Jaguar’s I-Pace, which looks just as good as it drives.

Let’s start with what it’s like behind the wheel, and it’s mightily impressive. Despite being an SUV weighing in excess of 2 tonnes, it handles far more like a sports or saloon car, with real dynamism. The steering offers plenty of weight, which gives you plenty of confidence to push on through the corners, while minimal body roll is another big surprise with this Jaguar.

There’s also plenty of performance to boot, too, with the I-Pace’s twin electric motors producing 396bhp and 696Nm of torque, which means 0-60mph can come along in just 4.6 seconds. Despite this eager performance, this Jaguar is still able to be a comfortable and refined daily car, with a supple ride that soaks up bumps well, particularly on cars fitted with smaller alloy wheels or optional adaptive air suspension for models wearing larger rims.

Then there’s the way the Jaguar I-Pace looks, and it’s arguably the most stylish of all the electric SUVs on the market today, with a certain elegance that models like the Mercedes EQC and Tesla Model X can’t match. Despite being an SUV, the I-Pace offers a low roofline to give it a sportier look, while neat details like a cutaway in the bonnet for improved cooling and flush-fitting door handles are fantastic design elements.

We also can’t forget about arguably the most important aspect of an electric car – its range. The Jaguar I-Pace won’t disappoint, either, with the British firm claiming this EV can manage 292 miles on a single charge. That’s more than you get with the Mercedes EQC, BMW iX3 and Audi e-tron, if slightly behind the Tesla Model X’s claimed range. You can also charge it at rapid charge points at speeds up to 100kW, meaning that in just 45 minutes the battery can be charged to 80 per cent.

Inside, the I-Pace is a perfect blend of luxury and technology too, while this is also a very roomy EV with plenty of space for adults in the rear seats and a large 656-litre boot that’s perfect for family duties.

The I-Pace is, therefore, without doubt one of the best electric SUVs on the market today.

The Jaguar I-Pace is first shown as a concept car in November 2016, though is a very close preview of the production model.
Jaguar unveils its showroom-ready I-Pace at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, showing its performance and striking design from the offset.
The I-Pace quickly picks up a whole range of awards, including most notably the award for World Car of the Year.
Jaguar updates its I-Pace in June 2020, fitting it out with a quicker onboard charger to speed up home charging times, as well as an upgraded media system that’s been introduced across the Jaguar and Land Rover model ranges.

What should I look for when buying a used I-PACE?

I-Pace has a very good reliability reputation, more so than the brand’s standard petrol and diesel models
Electrical gremlins are the most common faults, so check everything works as it should – especially the touchscreen.
I-Pace is covered by a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty, but the battery is separately covered for eight years and 100,000 miles.
