With a top engine size of just 1.25 litres, the Kia Picanto is not a car made for rubber-burning speed obsessives. It's an out and out city car, and a frugal one at that. 67mpg returns and CO2 emissions under 100g/km make it incredibly fuel efficient as well as road tax exempt. Yet for a small city car it is surprisingly lively, with handling that lets you attack corners and suspension that soaks up uneven city roads with ease. Affordable to buy and economic to run, the Picanto is one of the leading compact city cars on the market.

About Kia Picanto

Revealed at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Picanto was Kia’s new city car, based on a shortened platform from the Hyundai Getz. Tweaked for the European market, it got slightly more powerful engines and additional standard equipment, and proved a popular choice with money-savvy Brits.

‘Picanto’ relates to the Spanish word ‘picante’ for ‘spicy’, and Kia added some extra heat with the second-generation model, which was far more stylish and higher-quality than its predecessor. Kia expanded on those two things with the launch of a third-generation Picanto in 2017. A more powerful 1.0-litre turbocharged engine was also launched, alongside a more off-road-inspired ‘X-Line’ trim level.

Why buy a used Picanto?

The Picanto is undoubtedly one of the most rounded city cars on the market, and is a car that many could downsize into from far larger cars. For such a compact car – it measures just 3.6cm in length, which is 40cm smaller than a Ford Fiesta – it still offers a usable boot and enough space in the rear seats for adults.

It also remains terrific value for money, with new versions being among some of the most affordable new cars on sale, and things get even better on the used market. The Picanto’s range of small petrol engines also mean running costs could be very affordable, with the standard 66bhp petrol model capable of returning a claimed 58.9mpg, while CO2 emissions are low at 110g/km.

These days the Picanto is also quite a stylish choice, with all versions except the entry-level ‘1’ getting alloy wheels as standard, while the best looks come from the high-spec GT-Line and X-Line models. These get revised bumpers, with the GT-Line favouring a sportier design while the X-Line adds extra flair thanks to its chunkier bodykit, which helps to give it more of an SUV-like appearance.

Inside, the interior is a lot more pleasant than you expect, too, which not only is better-built than you’d expect for a city car, but it’s also quite stylish too, featuring a similar layout to Kia’s more expensive models, such as the Rio supermini and Stonic crossover. All trims on the latest cars such as the ‘1’ and ‘2’ also feature a large eight-inch touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Last but not least, if you’re looking at buying a new Picanto, it will be covered by Kia’s excellent seven-year warranty, which also transfers between owners. Just make sure that a car’s been well serviced and hasn’t exceeded 100,000 miles, as both of these things will invalidate the warranty.

Picanto updates

Here’s a short history of the Kia Picanto, which dates back to 2003.

Kia unveiled the Picanto at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a new, affordable five-seat city car. UK deliveries started in 2004.
A facelift followed in 2007, with new lights and a revised front end introduced.
Kia unveiled the second-generation Picanto in 2011, with the new model bringing a far more stylish design, new more efficient engines and both three- and five-door body styles.
Various special edition models would follow, including the ‘Halo’, ‘City’, ‘Quantum’ and ‘Chilli’.
Kia revealed a new third-generation Picanto in 2017, boasting a greater focus on quality, technology and interior spaciousness. The range would soon be expanded with a crossover-inspired ‘X-Line’ version, as well as a sportier ‘GT-Line’ model.
The Picanto was revised in 2020, gaining subtle exterior tweaks, enhanced connected services and an automated manual gearbox option.

What should I look for when buying a used Picanto?

With many Picantos being used around the city, have a good look for any damage that might have come from parking.
Similarly, check over the wheels, as the diamond-cut alloys especially can be quite costly to repair if they’ve been scuffed.
