Expert Opinion

While one of Land Rover’s smaller and more affordable options, the Discovery Sport is still seriously capable. With superb off-roading ability, great on-road manners and a well-built interior, it’s everything expected from a premium family SUV and more. While questions over its reliability remain, the Discovery Sport is a great all-rounder, while the option to have seven seats is certainly a novelty in this segment. The latest cars get plusher interiors, along with the choice of mild- and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

About Land Rover Discovery Sport

For nearly 20 years the Freelander had occupied the place as Land Rover’s most affordable model, and with plenty of success. But when it came to replacing the second-generation car in 2014, it was chosen to rebrand the model under the Discovery nameplate. The result? The Discovery Sport.

Offering the roomiest interior in its class, the option for seven seats and chunkier styling than the Freelander, it quickly became a huge success, being Land Rover’s most popular car, just after the Range Rover Evoque. For 2019, an updated model brought more modern styling, in-car technology and a higher-quality cabin.

Why buy a used Discovery Sport?

Land Rovers remain hugely desirable, and there’s always a lot of demand for its more affordable options, and this is why the Discovery Sport has proven such a success. For starters, there’s loads to choose from on the used market, while a broad range of engines and specifications means there will be something to suit most.

Yet despite the Discovery Sport’s affordable price, it’s hugely practical. When new, owners could specify it with a third row of seats for a £1,000 extra – something the majority went for. While they’re only really suitable for children, they’re hugely useful to have, and the Sport is the only car in this class available with seven seats, which sets it aside from the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC. The rest of the interior is also impressively spacious, and makes the Discovery Sport a very useful choice for families.

It also retains Land Rover’s famed go-anywhere ability. While front-wheel-drive versions are available (and bring lower running costs), these are quite rare, and four-wheel-drive will be fitted to the bulk you see for sale. These come with the firm’s Terrain Response system, which lets you traverse a range of terrains, and you can almost leave the car to do its thing with little fear of getting stuck. However, the Discovery Sport is still very accomplished once you’re back on the road, with impressive levels of refinement and comfort – the latter more so on cars fitted with a smaller set of alloy wheels.

The vast range of powertrains to choose from will also appeal, from diesels able to return a respectable 45mpg to punchy petrol models that can go from 0-60mph in just seven seconds, A plug-in hybrid is also available, with this car’s claimed 34-mile electric range making it ideal to complete smaller trips purely on electricity, bringing a significant reduction in running costs as a result.

Discovery Sport updates

Here’s a short history of the Land Rover Discovery, since its arrival in 2014.
  • Land Rover revealed the Discovery Sport as part of an expanded Discovery family in 2014. Boasting the option of seven seats, impressive off-roading pedigree and a stylish new design.
  • A ‘HSE Dynamic Lux’ trim launched in 2015, bringing with it improved driving dynamics and a sportier-looking design.
  • In 2019 Land Rover introduced a revised version, focussed on offering a more upmarket interior and electrified powertrains. Though looking similar to its predecessor, this model is actually based on a completely different architecture.

Which used Discovery Sport should I buy?

Land Rover offers a good range of trim options on the Discovery Sport, with the main examples being as follows.

Land Rover Discovery Sport

18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, body-coloured roof, heated front seats, leather steering wheel, 10-inch touchscreen, smartphone pack, cruise control and speed limiter, rear camera, keyless start, front and rear parking sensors.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Black

Available exclusively with P290 engine, configurable dynamics for improved drive, 20-inch gloss black wheels, red brake callipers, fixed panoramic roof, keyless entry, digital interactive driver display.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Urban Edition

20-inch alloy wheels, R-Dynamic front bumpers, black exterior pack, automatic headlight levelling, rear animated indicators, privacy glass, 12-way electric front seats, Pivi Pro with Connected Navigation, traffic sign recognition, electric tailgate, ClearSight rear view mirror.

Land Rover Discovery Sport R-Dynamic SE

Satin grey 20-inch alloy wheels, gloss black styling, ebony grained leather seats, interactive driver display, blind spot assist, rear traffic monitor, electric boot, sports styling kit.

Land Rover Discovery Sport R-Dynamic HSE

Matrix LED headlights, gloss grey 20-inch alloy wheels, Ebony Windsor leather seats with red stitching, 14-way electric front seats, keyless entry, Meridian sound system.

What should I look for when buying a used Discovery Sport?

  • Electrical issues are quite common, so check everything works as it should. The infotainment system can be problematic, so make sure it’s not glitchy.
  • Climate control system can fail, so, again, check it is working as it should.
  • Interior rattles and squeaks are more common than you might hope for, so be sure to listen out for any noises on test drives.
  • While not a reliability fault, it’s worth checking if an example has seven seats if you intend to use them. They fold neatly into the boot, so you might not notice the lack of a third row at first.
