Expert Opinion

In the SUV market there are few cars that can compare to the 40 year supremacy of the Range Rover. Although it is now essentially a top-end luxury car (with a price tag to match), it boasts off road performance which is almost unrivalled. Sporty yet sophisticated, it tackles any landscape with ease thanks to the Land Rover Terrain Response system, while on the road it is refined when it needs to be, and brisk when you want it to be. The 5.4 seconds it takes the imposing 5.0 litre V8 to hit 60mph is particularly impressive considering its weight. The only aspect that might present a problem is the price, and it being such a large and restrictive stumbling block, its no wonder that Range Rovers are most commonly associated with footballers and rappers.

About Land Rover Range Rover

A model that Land Rover wanted to create for years before it materialised, the Range Rover arrived in 1970 as the brand’s new more luxurious model, sitting above the more conventional Land Rover. Though originally a three-door, Land Rover expanded the range with a five-door option in 1981.

Ever since, it’s continued to become more luxurious and advanced than ever before, and is often considered as the best luxury SUV on the market, even as models from Bentley and Rolls-Royce have come to fruition.

Why buy a used Range Rover?

It’s such a cliche, but there really is nothing quite like a Range Rover. Let’s start out with this model’s luxury, which is unmatched by the majority of its rivals. Its interior is truly brimmed with materials of the highest quality, from walnut veneer to soft leather upholstery that feels in a different league to many other interiors. The level of standard interior equipment is also superb, including electric and heated front and rear seats, a panoramic glass roof with electric blind and a fantastic Meridian sound system.

The Range Rover is also a masterclass in comfort and refinement. With all cars riding on a fantastic electronic air suspension setup, it truly helps to iron out just about all bumps in the road, and makes this SUV one of the most relaxing cars around to drive. While rivals might instead prioritise a sporty edge, the Range Rover is focused on offering a calm and comfortable experience, and this is where it truly excels.

Though not that many Range Rovers are likely to be used off-road, it’s also useful to know just how useful this SUV is in tricker situations if needed. Fitted with Land Rover’s ‘Terrain Response’ system, this model will be able to go far further than just about all its rivals.

The Range Rover is also a great choice thanks to its extensive range of powertrain options – from great all-round diesel engines to a mighty 5.0-litre V8 model that kicks out 557bhp. We also can’t forget about the more recently introduced P400e plug-in hybrid model. Ideal for those that spend the majority of their time doing short trips or in urban areas, its 31-mile electric range will really help to reduce running costs if you’re able to charge it regularly.

Range Rover updates

Here’s a short history of the Range Rover, which dates all the way back to 1970.
  • After years of development, the Range Rover was finally revealed to the world in 1970 in three-door form. It wasn’t until 1981 that Land Rover would introduce a more practical four-door model to expand its appeal.
  • It was a full 14 years until the second-generation Range Rover arrived in 1994, bringing with it an increased focus on luxury. This was the first of the more modern models.
  • In 2001 the third-generation Range Rover, growing in size and, again, heading further upmarket.
  • In 2005 the Range Rover name would become more of a brand in its own right, with the introduction of a more driver-focused ‘Sport’ model. It’s been expanded further since with the Evoque in 2011 and Velar in 2017.
  • In 2012 the fourth generation Range Rover would arrive on sale, featuring a new lightweight aluminium body, longer wheelbase and the brand’s most advanced off-roading system yet. It was revised in 2017, seeing the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model alongside a new dual touchscreen system in the interior.
  • The Range Rover marks its 50th anniversary in 2020, with Land Rover launching a ‘Fifty’ special edition to mark the occasion. Just 1,970 would be made – a reference to the date the original model was launched.

What should I look for when buying a used Range Rover?

  • Air suspension can be troublesome and costly to sort. Try adjusting the car up and down using the main menu, and be cautious of buying a car that can’t change the height smoothly and without any clonks.
  • Electrics in general can be a cause for concern, so check everything works as it should, from the electric seats to the sunroof blind and main touchscreen.
  • Look out for any signs of oil leaks when a vehicle has been parked up.
  • If leather is not well looked after, it can start to crack, so look out for any damage.
