A sportscar which offers finesse, speed, excellent handling, style, and that is available under £20,000, the Mazda RX5 is the epitome of value for money. It should come as no surprise then, that it is also the world's most popular sportscar. The top performance option may sound meagre at just 2.0 litres, but its low weight means that it pulls away quickly and offers up a decent amount of speed, if not quite near the more impressive roadsters in its class. An affordable sportscar that is as fun to drive as many of its more powerful and more expensive competitors may sound like it is too good to be true, but the RX5 is proof that sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too.

About Mazda MX5

As the best-selling two-seat roadster ever, the Mazda MX-5 has a following that few cars can claim to. Launched in 1989 at the Chicago Motor Show, the MX-5 was a new, lightweight and affordable sports car that then arrived in the UK in 1990. Mazda has always managed to keep the MX-5 DNA there, across the following generations, which arrived in 1997, 2005 and 2015 respectively.

The latest MX-5 is just as appealing as ever, but brings greater refinement and features to this sports car than its predecessor, while still being light and fun to drive. Since 2017, you can also now choose it as the ‘RF’, which features an electric-folding metal hard-top and brings greater refinement.

Why buy a used MX5?

The number of small sports cars on the market is really limited these days, so the MX-5 is almost in a class of its own.

But the top reason to choose it is because of just how fun to drive it is. In a day and age where cars tend to be quite heavy and bulbous, there’s something really appealing about this Mazda, with its dinky size and remarkably low kerbweight of just over a tonne (on entry-level models). It’s also got what’s often regarded as the perfect sports car formula – rear-wheel-drive, manual gearbox and lightness – and it is hugely enjoyable to drive, being agile and involving, yet still at sensible speeds that won’t get you in trouble.

It’s also a roadster that’s very easy to live with. Granted as a two-seater and with its small boot, the MX-5 is not the most practical. However, if you don’t need a lot of room, it’s ideal. With a comfortable and compliant ride and decent refinement – particularly from the hard-top RF – it’ll be great to drive every day. Thanks to its lightness, it should also be quite affordable to run too, with more than 40mpg possible in daily driving – figures that you won’t get from competitors.

The MX-5’s affordability is also a big draw. In a day and age where even the cheapest Porsche roadster costs £50,000, there’s something hugely appealing about the MX-5 when it’s available for half the price, or roughly what you’d pay for an average family hatchback. Standard kit is also generous, including features like LED headlights, keyless entry and a seven-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring. Used models are also tremendous value for money if you want some cheap sports car thrills, with usable examples available from as little as £2,000.

Here’s a short history of the MX-5, which dates back to 1989.

Mazda pulled the wraps off the new MX-5 at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show as its new lightweight, affordable sports car. It had been penned for seven years before Mazda revealed it. It arrived in the UK in 1990.
In 1997 the second-generation MX-5 was shown, arriving without the pop-up headlights and additional weight. It also featured a more powerful engine to enhance its performance.
The third-generation MX-5 reached showrooms in 2005, undergoing a full overhaul. With a more muscular look and modern interior, the entry-level 1.6-litre engine was dropped and a punchy 158bhp 2.0-litre unit was launched as the flagship.
It received an update in 2009 to enhance its performance, while a 2012 facelift brought more attractive styling and safety improvements.
The fourth-generation MX-5 arrived in 2015, bringing a striking new design and new 1.5- and 2.0-litre engine options. Mazda also dropped the weight of it, despite safety and tech enhancements.
Mazda launched a Retractable Fastback (RF) model in 2017, bringing an electric-folding metal roof, compared to the manual fabric cover. Various special editions have been launched, including a 30th Anniversary Edition in 1989 and a Sport Venture model in 2021.

What should I look for when buying a used MX5?

Earlier MX-5s had quite a bad reputation for rusting, so it’s worth thoroughly looking for any signs of corrosion or bubbling.
As with any convertible, check the roof mechanism is working properly – especially on the electric RF version. With the soft-top, look out for any rips or damage to the roof, and be aware of any links.
As it’s a sports car, making sure that the model has been serviced and maintained regularly is particularly important too.
Be aware of models that have been used on track, as these will have lived a much harder life.
