Expert Opinion

While a ‘four-door coupe’ might be somewhat of a marketing term, it’s an accurate way to describe the CLA. Offering sleeker looks than a traditional saloon car, the CLA was the first true model in this segment, and slotted beneath Mercedes’ own CLS, which adopts the same sort of principes. Based on the same underpinnings as the A-Class, it offers a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, including the super-hot ‘45’ model that turns up the thrill factor. With a Shooting Brake body style also being introduced in 2015, it shows that you really can combine style and spaciousness.

Mercedes loves a niche and the CLA most certainly sits in one – with this compact four-door coupe establishing this segment upon its launch in 2013. Introduced as a more affordable option for style-savvy buyers, it soon became a popular addition to the range. A roomier Shooting Brake launched in 2015, offering buyers a more practical – but no less stylish – choice.

Sportier AMG models have also followed with the CLA 35 and CLA 45 – the latter delivering supercar-rivalling pace at times. Meanwhile a second-generation CLA hit showrooms in 2019, bringing with it more style, interior space and a high-tech cabin.

Why buy a used CLA?

High up on the list of reasons to choose the CLA over competitors will be for the way it looks. Though not technically a ‘coupe’, that sloping roofline certainly offers lots of appeal, and begins to slope away from the centre of the roof. It certainly makes it look especially eye-catching, and actually gives it the image of far more expensive cars.

There’s plenty of substance to back up that style too, as it doesn’t disappoint once you’re behind the wheel – especially the second-generation cars. While not especially fun, the CLA is a very solid choice, combining impressive levels of refinement with a safe and secure feel that will make it a joy to live with. You can also choose the hotter AMG models if you want more thrills, with their strong performance and dynamic changes making them good fun to drive. Especially the latest CLA 45 ‘S’ model, which produces a huge 415bhp and means the CLA can hit 0-60mph in under four seconds.

Another highlight of the CLA is its interior. This particularly applies to the second-generation models, though earlier models still offer an upmarket feel with good build quality. The latest cars, however, really bring the wow factor, with their brilliant Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) – the name for the infotainment system – being especially slick to use, while also giving the cabin a really modern look and feel.

The option for the Shooting Brake is also another reason to consider this CLA, as it adds greater practicality and everyday usability. Granted, it’s not as roomy inside as your typical estate, but it allows for a great balance of style and practicality, with these sleeker models being quite rare these days.

CLA updates

Here’s a short history of the Mercedes CLA, which has been around since 2013.

Mercedes revealed its new CLA as a sleek four-door coupe, and helped to establish the segment, which offers an alternative to a regular hatchback or saloon. Later in 2013, Mercedes would introduce its first AMG model in the form of the CLA 45, featuring a 355bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine.
In 2015, Mercedes revealed a striking Shooting Brake model, adding estate car-like practicality, but still in a glamorous silhouette. A ‘45’ model would also be launched.
In 2019 Mercedes introduced a new second-generation CLA, offering more style, longer dimensions and a raft of new technology. The Shooting Brake model would launch a few months later.
Also in 2019, Mercedes introduced ‘35’ and ‘45’ AMG models of both bodystyles for those seeking greater performance.
For 2020, a plug-in hybrid launched for those looking to bring down their running costs.

What should I look for when buying a used CLA?

Cabin quality on earlier CLAs fell a bit short of Mercedes standards, so look out for any signs of damage and wear. Problems were addressed with later examples.
There are lots of tech and gadgets to play with, so it’s worth making sure that everything works as it should.
Some cars are fitted with diamond-cut wheels, which have a habit of corroding early. It’s not a problem exclusive to Mercedes, but one worth looking at nonetheless.
