Now one of Mercedes’ most popular models, the GLA is the most affordable way of getting behind the wheel of an SUV with the three-pointed star on the bonnet. Based on the A-Class, it’s now been on sale for two generations and is more rugged to look at and roomier than the standard hatchback. Given the popularity of both SUVs and the Mercedes A-Class in the firm’s range, it was no big surprise when Mercedes decided to combine both of these things to create the GLA. Essentially a raised A-Class, it offered a higher driving position and four-wheel-drive options.

The second-generation GLA, which arrived in 2020, represented a big step up, with its premium tech-filled cabin really raising the bar, while also being roomier than before too. Across both GLA generations Mercedes has offered sporty AMG models, while more recently a plug-in hybrid has been introduced for those looking for something a bit greener.

Why buy a used GLA?

Ultimately why you’ll choose the GLA over the A-Class is for the way it looks. With its raised ride height and lower plastic trim, it certainly looks a lot more rugged than the regular hatchback. That said, despite the chunkier styling, it still manages to look sporty, particularly on the AMG Line models, which get a far more aggressive body kit.

It’s also roomier than a standard A-Class, and well worth considering if you want something more practical than a hatchback, but without the sheer bulk that comes with a larger SUV. Thanks to a stretched wheelbase, there’s more room in the back of the GLA than there is with the standard car, while the boot is noticeably bigger than the regular A-Class too.

But the best thing about the GLA is its interior. Like the latest crop of Mercedes models, it’s a perfect execution in how a premium car’s cabin should look like. All versions get a touchscreen and digital instrument cluster (the size of which depends on the trim level), which are merged together in one display. It gives the GLA an especially high-tech feel, which really sets the benchmark for quality and technology in this class.

The sheer range of powertrains available also adds to the GLA’s desirability. From more affordable petrol options that make this Mercedes quite accessible to the range of diesels on offer, which can return more than 50mpg and are ideal for those doing plenty of longer trips. If you want to reduce your running costs, the GLA 250e plug-in hybrid is also a very appealing choice, especially with an electric range up to 39 miles.

Meanwhile at the other end of the spectrum, the high-performance AMG models guarantee you plenty of thrills on every journey, particularly the flagship GLA 45 S model, which kicks out more than 400bhp, and lets this SUV accelerate from 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds.

GLA updates

Here’s a short history of the Mercedes GLA, which dates back to 2013.

Mercedes unveiled the GLA as its new compact SUV in August 2013 – essentially being a raised version of the A-Class, and rivalling the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.
In early 2014 the GLA spawned a new AMG ‘45’ model, using the same 355 bhp engine from the A45, allowing for a 0-60mph time of just 4.6 seconds.
Mercedes revised the GLA in 2017, bringing a slightly reworked design, cabin tweaks and a new petrol engine option.
The second-generation GLA hit dealer forecourts in 2020, bringing far more technology, a roomier interior and a higher-up look.
In true Mercedes fashion, sporty GLA 35 and GLA 45 models joined the range – the latter able to reach 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds. A plug-in hybrid was also introduced to add some balance to the line-up.

What should I look for when buying a used GLA?

Many GLAs come with diamond-cut alloys, which look the part, but can be expensive if they need refurbishing. Check for any signs of damage.
