This Japanese super-mini has been a mainstay of UK roads since its introduction in to the UK in 1983. Why? It's dependable and cost-effective; the German Auto Assoc. named the first Micra (K10) the most reliable car around. The facelifted K11 (92-97) went one better, lifting the prestigious 1993 European Car of the Year Award. The K12 (02-10) set a new bar in the supermini sector with a longer wheelbase and more room, an even more stylish headlight array and offered keyless ignition on top models. The UK-designed K12 C+C Coupé Convertible is particularly head-turning. The Micra K13 was unveiled in 2010 and appeals to both men and women while keeping safety to the fore - it earned four (out of five) stars in the NCAP Safety Awards. The Micra may not be a market leader in terms of excitement or performance, but it is certainly one of the most affordable cars to run. For that reason it has consistently been popular with drivers of all types, looking for a good, reliable and affordable vehicle.

Why buy a used Micra?

Nissans are well known for building solid cars that last and the Mirca is no different. Well known for being affordable and reliable, the Micra is one of Nissan's top performers in the supermini class.

The running costs of the Nissan Micra are one of the most attractive aspects of this car, and so for anyone looking for something economical you would be hard pressed to find a better performing vehicle. Fuel efficiency is good, and the standard 1.2 petrol engine model offers impressive returns of 56.5mpg, and CO2 emissions of around 115g/km. There is a better performing supercharged 1.2 DIG-S model however, which is faster and returns 68.9mpg and CO2 emissions under 100g/km, making it road tax exempt.

There are reports that the affordability of the Micra can sometimes work to its detriment, and there have been complaints of a lack of quality in terms of its finishings. Basic models come with limited specifications, while their interiors can often feel very basic. But a good reliability rating means that such problems are counteracted by its affordable running and upkeep costs.

The exterior design varies depending on what generation you choose. The most recent fourth generation is more conservative than its predecessor, which featured a few more radical design flairs. Space wise the Micra is competent - the third generation model offering the most boot space at 371 litres - offering good passenger and driver room, but it sits behind other cars in its class.

As well as being the most efficient, the 1.2 supercharged engine offers better power and performance than the standard model, yet all Micras are very well suited to city driving. The mix of small dimensions, good visibility and responsive handling make this a perfect little run-around, even if this means that it might not be the most exciting car available.

The Nissan Micra safety rating is good, having scored four out of a possible five stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety tests. Along with Nissan's consistently good reliability record, the Micra is a car which is both affordable and trustworthy.

Nissan Micras have been praised over their history for being some of the most reliable and affordable cars on the market.

Here's a quick overview of the Nissan Micra's thirty year history, starting in 1982.

The Nissan Micra was first launched (under the name Micra K10) in 1982 as the brand's main competitor in the supermini category.
Nissan released a number of limited edition Micras including a Micro Superturbo in 1989 with a superior engine and the Be-1 - which featured a revised chassis - at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1985.
In 1992 the second generation of Micra is released, featuring brand new DOHC 16-valve engines, and in 1993 won the European Car of the Year award.
Having gained a reputation for reliability and economy, the Micra topped a reliability survey of small cars carried out by the German Automobile Association in 1995 after recording just seven point five breakdowns per 1,000 cars over four years.
The radically redesigned third generation Mica (K12) was introduced at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, and was almost universally well received.
The following years saw a number of redesigns and limited edition models launched, including the Bolero and Micra C+C, a coupé convertible.
In 2003 the K12 topped the What Car? magazine's Security Supertest, achieving a good score for its locking and immobiliser system.
Nissan was ranked 6th out of 26 manufacturers in the What Car? magazine's Reliability Supertest, with the K11 Micra being named as the most reliable model.

What should I look for when buying a used Micra?

Cars used primarily for inner city, urban driving suffer a harder life than those spent in the country, so be wary not to be overly enthusiastic over a low mileage.
Have a look around the exterior of the car, checking the underside of the chassis as well as the main body. Some owners have mentioned that Micras are prone to rust (especially the front crossmember), and so check for both rust and evidence of trying to conceal rust.
Listen for any odd knocks and bumps - the timing chain commonly makes a bit of noise when the engine is first switched on but should quickly silence.
When taking it out for a test drive listen for any noise coming from the clutch. If you hear a noise when idling that disappears when pressing down the clutch, it may be worn out.
Check the brakes by holding the wheel loosely to see if the car pulls to one particular side when using them.
Micras - and Nissans in general - are known to be very reliable cars, especially in terms of the longevity of their engines. So keep an eye out for some of the smaller, but no less important, details that could prove to be troublesome in the future. With these in check you can ensure you find a good, affordable car.
