Expert Opinion

This spacious and responsive mini-MPV has been on sale in Europe since 2006 and in two generations, the first between 2006 and 2012 and the second between July 2012 and the current day. Those looking to support the domestic manufacturing base should consider its UK production credentials. Even at its most standard, the original Note has an impressive array of trim, the 'S' offers electric windows and door mirrors, CD, remote locking, alloys and front fogs and Flexi-Board boot system. Upgrade to the SE and you'll get eye-catching 15" alloys and AC. Spend a little more and the SVE adds the comfort of climate control, privacy of tinted rear windows, 16" alloys and ESP. Alongside that responsive steering, there's low emissions and competitive fuel economy across all three engines -1.4 and 1.6 petrol, and 1.5 diesel. All three are on offer with five speed manual or four speed auto gearboxes. The second generation Note was launched very recently and arrives with two equally cost-effective engine types, both 1.2, and three new trims Visia, Acenta and Tekna.

About Nissan Note

First launched in the UK in 2006, the Note has been lauded by both customers and critics for its practicality and its fun. A feat made all the more impressive considering its size.

Little bigger than a supermini, the Nissan Note packs in a surprising amount of space into its small frame, and along with good running costs and a smooth, mature drive, it is no surprise that it remains popular as a solid family car.

Why buy a used Note?

A later entry into the mini-MPV market than many of its rivals, the Nissan Note is a spacious, practical family car which manages to be both sizeable on the inside and compact on the outside.

The exterior of the Note shares more in common with a supermini than it does a people carrier. Spacewise however, it offers far more. Only slightly longer than a Peugeot 207, what gives it more room is a raised roofline, which opens up the cabin. While this may arguably give the Note a somewhat boxier exterior design, inside it opens up a surprising amount of space.

Boot size as standard stands at 437 litres when the removable floor panels are taken out, but this can be almost tripled in size with the rear seats folded down. Passenger space is also good and the rear bench seats are designed to slide back and forth to offer either more or less legroom. Considering its size, the interior space the Note offers makes it one of the roomiest cars in its class.

But aside from being spacious and a good, stable family car, the Note has a fair bit of life in its drive. While the more straightforward superminis might have a bit more get up and go, the Note packs a fair punch despite being slightly bigger.

The 1.5, 88bhp dCi diesel satisfies the top end of the power scale, offering 148lb of torque from 1750rpm, while the smaller 1.4 petrol engine manages 0-60mph in 12.9 seconds. So too does the ride and handling impress. Surprisingly calm on less maintained roads, the Note fares well on the twistier, tricky roads, offering a ride that is fun as well as mature and comfortable.

Efficiency is good on the Note, and while no model offers CO2 emissions under the 100g/km mark, insurance is reasonable and engine economy is good. The 1.4 petrol returns around 50pmg, which might not make it a market leader, but does make it a very economical car to run considering its space and performance offerings.

Here's a short history of the Nissan Note, starting in Japan in 2004.

A Japanese version of the Nissan Note was first released in Japan in 2004. Designed to compete with the Vauxhall Meriva and the Citroen C3 Picasso, it was built using the Renault Modus platform.
The Nissan Note was introduced to Europe in 2006, when it was put on sale in the UK.
The early models were called the S, the SE and the SVE, but they are later replaced by the current models; the n-tec+, Acenta and Visia.
In 2006, and then again in 2007 and 2008, the Nissan Note was given the Auto Express' award for best supermini.
The Nissan Note was named What Car? magazine's Used Car of the Year 2009 in the supermini category, and was the runner up in the overall Used Car of the Year award.
The 2012 Which? Car Survey named the Note the UK's most reliable new MPV.
The second generation Note was unveiled in 2012, and was initially put on sale in Japan. The new model features two new choices of engine - the 1.2 HR12DE and supercharged 1.2 HR12DDR - and an improved engine efficiency across the range.

What should I look for when buying a used Note?

Check the outside of the car for any visible faults such as rust, corrosion or cracks - especially the windscreen. There have been instances of the Note's windscreen developing small cracks in its bottom corners.
Also make sure to check the tyres, those which come standard on new Notes tend to wear down quite quickly.
Some Nissan Notes models suffer from noisy fan belts. If this is the case it might be worth speaking to your vendor to see if they might be able to change it to one of the more modern belts before buying.
Some Nissan Notes have had problems with the front door locks. When locked, listen for odd noises (particularly a buzzing noise), which would indicate a problem.
Check for any black smoke coming from the exhaust when the car is revved. If there is, it could mean that the EGR is faulty, which can cause the turbo to overheat and blow. In Notes there have been instances that this has happened and only the turbos have been replaced and not the EGR, so make sure you check the maintenance history to get the whole story.
