As crossovers began to rise in popularity in the early 2010s, Peugeot was quick to notice and take advantage, with its 2008 being the brand’s first baby-SUV of this kind, bringing chunky looks but still affordable running costs.

That has applied ever since, with the most recent 2008 arriving in showrooms in 2020 – boasting a stand-out design inspired by that of Peugeot’s flagship 508, as well as moving upmarket with its premium interior.

Why buy a used 2008?

Peugeots have really stepped up their style in recent years, and both generations of 2008 have really shown this and moved with the times. Not just being focussed on the chunky styling that is common in this class, but also a bit of added glamour to give the model a more premium look. Though first-generation 2008s still look the part, it’s the latest car where things really impress. Headed up by sharp lines and creases, a frameless grille and fancy LED lighting, this is a model that most certainly looks the part.

However, that styling doesn’t end at the outside, as when you open the door you’ll realise it looks just as modern inside. Cool details like a large touchscreen (depending on trim level), a 3D instrument cluster and a small squared-off steering wheel really help to give this Peugeot a unique look in this class, as well as feeling far more upmarket than its price suggests.

The powertrain choice on the 2008 is also one of the most extensive in this class, ranging from especially efficient diesels capable of returning over 60mpg to punchy petrol options that are able to accelerate from 0-60mph in under eight seconds. If you’re looking at the latest generation of 2008, there’s also the option of an electric model – the e-2008. Using the same 50kWh battery and 134bhp electric motor as that found in models like the Vauxhall Corsa-e, this EV is able to travel for a claimed 206 miles on a single charge, which is very respectable by class standards. As it can also charge at up to 100kW, it means the battery could also be charged to 80 per cent in just half an hour.

You’ll also like the 2008 if you feel you’ve outgrown a supermini like Peugeot’s own 208 or a Ford Fiesta. Offering greater rear seat space and a 434-litre boot, this crossover is well worth considering if you’re looking for a small family car.

Peugeot unveiled its 2008 at the start of 2013, boasting a stylish new design and being the brand’s first true crossover.
Peugeot updated the 2008 in 2016, giving the model a more stylish front end thanks to a new, attractive grille. A new GT Line trim level also helped to add extra glamour to this crossover. An Allure Premium grade also joins the line-up in 2018. A year later, the one-millionth example rolled off the production line.
In 2020, the second-generation 2008 arrived. Boasting a far more stylish design and premium interior, an electric e-2008 model was also introduced for those wishing to choose an EV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2008?

Earlier 2008s fitted with a semi-automatic gearbox were prone to driving in quite a jerky fashion.
Diesel cars are fitted with a particulate filter used to help clean the exhaust system. However, if cars only do shorter and slower trips, it can stop this system working, causing further issues down the line.
Diamond-cut alloy wheels are quite susceptible to corrosion and are pricey to refurbish.
