Launched in 2009, the five-seater 3008 is a comfortable, practical and roomy addition to the competitive Crossover sector. The 3008 offers five 1.6 litre and three 2.0 litre engines. The 1.6 turbo is particularly quick and hybrid version particularly smooth, offering up to 74mpg! Despite its size, handling on all 3008 models is confident around town and suspension can tackle all but the deepest potholes. It's also comparatively cheap to insure and particularly reliable. The entry trim is fine but it's worth spending a bit more to get the Active spec where you'll get automatic lights and wipers, sensors for parking, SatNav and Bluetooth. And, if you regularly tow any other vehicle, keep an eye out for models with Grip Control which provides extra traction.

About Peugeot 3008

More established in the hatchback and saloon segments, Peugeot trod new ground when it created the 3008 compact crossover.

Peugeot might have arrived late to the compact crossover market, but they brought with them a unique blend of SUV, MPV and hatchback qualities all wrapped up in the 3008. And recent upgrades have improved the spec, the look and the driving experience, making the 3008 an appealing choice for the practical family that fancies something a little bit different to the typical compact crossover.

Why buy a used 3008?

The 3008 is Peugeot’s first crack at a compact crossover and they’ve made a stellar effort, cleverly combining elements of an SUV, MPV and a hatchback. Its 2008 release means the 3008 is a bit of a latecomer to a competitive market, but already it has proved a worthy alternative to the likes of Nissan’s Qashqai, VW’s Golf SV and Citroen’s C4 Picasso.

Upgrades to the model in 2013 have given it a slightly sportier look. These include a new front bumper and grill, arrowhead-like LED tail lights and fake front and rear skidplates that provide a sort of ruggedness to its overall appearance. Bigger alloy wheels add a bit of style but do somewhat compromise the smoothness of the car’s ride.

The build quality of the interior is solid, perhaps only being outdone by the Golf SV which feels a little bit more upmarket. But the 3008 certainly holds its own in the competition for comfort, as it has masses of head space, leg room and storage up front. The Allure model features a reversing camera, colour head-up display, panoramic sunroof and sat-nav system. The only aspect the back seats lack is leg room, which may be an issue for passengers over six foot. A glowing feature is the boot that can be made even bigger than it already is by dropping the backseats, splitting the tailgate and adjusting the floor to any of three different positions. Plus, handy extras include power sockets and a torch.

All round visibility is brilliant, particularly because of the rear quarter windows which give great confidence when changing lanes. This combined with the high seating position means the 3008 offers an authoritative view of the road. Whether darting about town, zipping down the motorway or navigating the backroads, the 3008’s ride is smooth and unflustered with minimal body roll for a car its size.

As for economy of drive, the smooth 1.6 litre BlueHDi 120 diesel offers almost 60mpg and emits around 110g/km of CO2. However, the Hybrid-4, which combines Peugeot’s 161bhp diesel combustion engine (driving the front wheels) with a 36bhp electric motor (driving the rears), emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and returns an impressive 75mpg, making it more efficient than both the

Skoda Yeti and Kia Sportage. Sadly, the same can’t be said of the petrol models, which can be rather thirsty.

Here’s a brief overview of the 3008’s relatively short history since Peugeot first released it in 2008.

In 2008, the 3008 was unveiled to the public by Peugeot for the first time in Dubrovnik, Croatia, introducing the Sport, Active and Exclusive models.
In 2010, the 3008 was named the Semperit Irish Car of the Year in Ireland as well as Car of the Year by What Car? magazine in the UK.
In June 2010, the 3008 Sport and Exclusive model’s became available with a 2.0 litre 163bhp HDi diesel engine and 6-speed automatic gearbox.
In 2011, Peugeot added two new models to the 3008 range, the 3008 SR and the 3008 ENVY Special Edition.
Sales of the 3008 peaked in Europe in 2011 as Peugeot sold 115,906 cars.
In 2012, the 3008 Hybrid-4 was launched as the world’s first mass production diesel-electric hybrid.
In 2013, Peugeot improved the spec of the 3008 and changed the exterior’s aesthetics to appeal to a broader customer base.

What should I look for when buying a used 3008?

The automated manual gearbox can sometimes suffer from jerky gear changes, so make sure you shift up and down a fair bit during your test drive to put it through its paces.
Check under the bonnet and on the underside of the car for signs of oil leaks. If it was run for any length of time without oil, there’s a good chance of damage.
Some customers have complained about failings in both the cruise control and the turbo, so check these are performing well during your test drive. Take it out on the motorway if possible.
It has been reported that the battery may need replacing more often than usual. Check that the car you’re interested in has a relatively new one.
Make sure the clutch is in good working order as a few 3008 buyers have complained of theirs needing to be replaced with less than 36,000 miles on the clock.
The steering can sometimes, albeit in rare instances, veer ever so slightly to the left. When safeto do so, check if the steering shifts at all, as this will only get worse over time.
