Expert Opinion

As with much of the more recent Skoda range, the Fabia is a surprisingly excellent car which tops reliability and customer satisfaction polls, has been universally well received among critics, and offers serious competition to the leading superminis on the market such as the Ford Fiesta and the VW Polo (with which it shares a platform). As well as being affordable (to both run and buy), mature and practical, the Fabia has few faults other than that the Skoda name remains a little uncool. But, ultimately it is cars much like these which are the reason that that reputation is quickly becoming as redundant as an 70s and 80s-era Skoda used to be.

About Skoda Fabia

Following the Octavia, the Fabia was Skoda’s second car to benefit from big investment that came from the Volkswagen Group. Launching in 1999, this supermini showed a more refined side to the firm, while still offering great value for money.

Two generations later and it continues to follow that path, now being one of the roomiest and best-equipped cars in its segment, and a great all-rounder in the small car segment.

Why buy a used Fabia?

Top of the reasons to choose a Skoda Fabia is the value for money it represents. It’s already an affordable option, even when new, so it’s no surprise that it’s even better when you’re buying a used example. All versions, regardless of age, also come with plenty of equipment, with the latest examples still getting a touchscreen, Bluetooth and LED daytime running lights even in the lowest trims.

If you want a small car that still offers a decent amount of room, this Skoda is also worth considering. Again, all versions offer a roomy cabin, but the latest example takes things up another level. In fact, when it arrived in 2015 it had the largest boot of any small car on the market, and though a few rivals might have now overtaken it, you’ll still struggle to find something roomier of a similar size.

Then you also have the Estate option to choose from, which is one of the only supermini-based estate cars on the market. Ideal for those wanting a huge boot but still with a relatively small footprint, it’s well worth considering. With its 530-litre boot, it’s ideal if you have a larger dog, for example, thanks to its boxy shape.

Another reason to choose the Fabia is for its low running costs. Just about all versions are fantastically efficient, though past diesel models called ‘GreenLine’ had a special focus on reduced fuel consumption. Featuring a small turbocharged diesel engine, Skoda claimed it could achieve a remarkable 83.1mpg, while CO2 emissions of 89g/km also meant it qualified for free car tax. Even the newer turbocharged petrol engines will still be economical to run.

Meanwhile for a new driver, the Fabia’s 59bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine is a superb option as it sits in the lowest insurance group (one), which should help to avoid steeper premiums.

Fabia updates

Here’s a short history of the Skoda Fabia, which originally launched in 1999.

Skoda pulled the covers off the Fabia in 1999, and it’s one of the first models to benefit from the brand’s Volkswagen Group ownership – using the same platform as the Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza.
Skoda launched an Estate version of the Fabia in 2000, offering a more practical version. It’s something that’s been offered ever since.
In 2003, the first Fabia vRS hot hatch launched, and interestingly with a TDI diesel engine that offered a great combination of performance and efficiency.
A second-generation Fabia arrived in 2007, being more stylish, larger in size and better-equipped than before. Versions such as the Sport, Scout and GreenLine.
A facelift would follow in 2010, bringing a sleeker look, new engines and also a vRS version again, though this time in petrol form. In 2011, Skoda introduced the Monte Carlo version – bringing sporty looks but with no change in performance.
At the start of 2015, the third-generation Fabia would launch, bringing a large boot and far more technology than its predecessor. It was updated in 2018 with new LED lighting, more interior refinements and additional driver technology systems.

What should I look for when buying a used Fabia?

DSG automatic gearboxes across the Volkswagen Group can occasionally suffer from jerkiness, so you should watch out for this on any test drive.
Some owners report trouble connecting their phone to the car’s system, either with Bluetooth or SmartLink. We’d advise making sure you can do this to save any headaches down the line.
Diesel engines aren’t well-suited to small urban journeys, so be aware of particularly low-mileage diesel models.
