Expert Opinion

Skoda’s SUV streak started with the funky-looking Yeti – a rugged, boxy-looking SUV that arrived in 2009, yet still remains well-loved to this day. Replacing such a car was never going to be easy, but the firm lived up to the expectation with the Karoq. Arriving in 2017, it brought a modern and classy design that gave it more of a premium appearance, while very much acting as the junior to the seven-seat Skoda Kodiaq. Sales have grown dramatically and it’s now one of the firm’s best-selling cars, helped by the option of versions like the SportLine, which add more character to this otherwise quite sensible family SUV.

About Skoda Karoq

SUVs are now an integral part of Skoda’s range, comprising of the Kodiaq, Karoq and Kamiq. It’s the middle option that will make the most sense to many, as it still offers a plentiful amount of space for families.

Launched in 2017, the Karoq replaced the Yeti and immediately impressed with its good range of petrol and diesels, with more capable 4x4 versions also available for those wanting that extra capability. The range has since expanded to include the more rugged-looking Scout and racier-looking SportLine, while a 2022 update for the Karoq saw the introduction of additional technology and slightly redesigned styling.

Why buy a used Karoq?

Mid-size family SUVs don’t get much better than the Karoq, and this is a true top-drawer model in a class where models really have to shine.

High up on the reasons to choose the Karoq is for practicality. It’s an impressively versatile choice, with its wide-opening doors and easy access immediately ticking plenty of boxes. It’s also fitted with a fantastic rear seating arrangement, which is known as ‘VarioFlex’. With this, all the seats can individually be slid, folded or removed entirely, with a generous amount of rear seat space for passengers offered, along with a large boot measuring up to 588 litres.

There’s a lot more to it than just practicality, though, as it’s also good to drive. Granted, it’s not the sportiest model in this segment, but it handles well and offers great comfort and refinement on all but the largest 19-inch alloy wheels. There’s also a fantastic range of petrol and diesel engines available, including efficient diesels capable of returning almost 60 mpg to petrol engines capable of accelerating the Karoq to 60 mph in under seven seconds.

It also has a very classy and high-quality feel throughout, from its modern and smart exterior design to its well-built cabin, which feels more than capable of living up to the hardships of family life. All versions also get plenty of equipment, including dual-zone climate control, an eight-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring and parking sensors.

Here’s a short history of the Skoda Karoq, which debuted in 2017.

Acting as a replacement for the well-received Yeti, Skoda unveiled the Karoq as a stylish, modern and practical family SUV in May 2017, with first deliveries arriving right at the end of the year.
In 2018 the Karoq range expanded to include a more rugged-looking and capable Scout model, with a sportier-looking SportLine version debuting slightly later in the year.
For 2019, Skoda launched a powerful 187bhp 2.0-litre petrol model with four-wheel-drive, which is exclusively available on the SportLine.
A revised Kodiaq arrived in 2022, with the model boasting new technology such as Matrix LED headlights, and a more modern design including a front-end redesign.

What should I look for when buying a used Karoq?

SportLine and Edition models are fitted with large 19-inch alloy wheels, which look great but are very susceptible to kerbing damage, which can be expensive to fix.
Make sure that the seats all fold and slide as they should, as it will be annoying if they’re faulty.
The 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine has proven a bit juddery in models across the Volkswagen Group. Make sure it’s smooth, quiet and responsive on your test drive.
The remote batteries in the key don’t seem to last too long if not used regularly, so make sure both keys can unlock and start the car.
