If you want a spacious seven-seat SUV without breaking the bank, you won't find much better than the Skoda Kodiaq. Launched in 2017, it was the first model from the firm to come with a third row of seats and immediately impressed with its smart design and good driving experience. Offered with a broad range of petrol and diesel engines, Skoda introduced a sportier vRS model in early 2019, bringing more aggressive looks and additional performance to the Kodiaq range. If you want the latest Kodiaq, look out for the updated car, launched in 2019, which can be spotted by its extended rear spoiler and wider grille.

About Skoda Kodiaq

Skoda launched its first SUV in 2009 with the Yeti, but a second model was a long time coming. The Kodiaq, when it was finally introduced in 2017, proved to be worth the wait though, and as Skoda's first seven-seater brought even greater roominess to a brand synonymous with offering customers plenty of space.

Though lacking a hybrid powertrain, which many of its rivals come as, the Kodiaq remains a fine large SUV, and at a relatively affordable price too.

Why buy a used Kodiaq?

The Skoda Kodiaq is unquestionably one of the best large SUVs on the market, and high up on the reasons to choose it is for its practicality. Its large dimensions equate to an impressively roomy interior, with plenty of room on offer in all three rows of seats – adults will even be able to get relatively comfortable in the third row, which can’t be said about too many rivals. You do have to be aware that not all versions come as standard with seven seats, though, as it was an optional extra to have the rearmost units on lower-spec trims.

It's kitted out with a range of Skoda's excellent 'simply clever' features too, including umbrellas in the doors if you're ever caught out in the rain, along with door edge protectors that pop out, and try and prevent any damage to your vehicle – these are particularly useful if you have children.

Not only do you get plenty of space for your money, but you also get loads of equipment as well. Models come with rear parking sensors, climate control, LED lights and an eight-inch touchscreen all as standard, while further up the range you get leather upholstery, an advanced sound system and even ventilated seats.

Whether you're looking for an original Kodiaq or the newer facelifted model, both are very handsome in design, with a smart front grille, neat lights and great proportions all making this SUV look especially classy. There's also different styles to choose from, including the more rugged Scout model, alongside the racier SportLine version. If you want performance to go with the looks, the vRS model is packed with either powerful 237bhp 2.0-litre diesel or 242bhp 2.0-litre petrol too.

Kodiaq updates

Here's a short history of the Skoda Kodiaq, which dates back to 2016.

Skoda unveiled the Kodiaq in September 2016, being the brand's first seven-seater, and offering the largest boot in its segment. Sales would begin right at the start of 2017.
In 2017, Skoda revealed two new derivatives – the rugged-looking Scout and a racier SportLine model, which added more aggressive styling. These versions wouldn't reach showrooms until 2018 though.
In 2018 Skoda showcased a range-topping Laurin & Klement model, boasting high-end features like a full-length sunroof and heated and ventilated leather seats.
In late 2018 the Kodiaq vRS was revealed as the brand's first true performance SUV, boasting a bi-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine.
In 2021 the Kodiaq received a mid-life update, receiving tweaked styling and more technology, while the vRS model switched to a 242bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine instead.

What should I look for when buying a used Kodiaq?

Not all cars came with seven seats, so if you need that third row, make sure they're fitted.
The Kodiaq came with plenty of add-ons as standard, so it's worth making sure these are still fitted – such as the parcel shelf, cargo nets and umbrellas in the doors.
If cars have an electric boot, make sure it works as it should.
The Kodiaq is quite a large vehicle, so look out for any scuffs or dents that might have come from parking, including on the alloy wheels.
