Expert Opinion

The term ‘game-changer’ is thrown around a lot these days, but Tesla really was key to elevating the popularity of EVs, and quite significantly. It remains the electric car manufacturer that people think of first and foremost, and the Model 3 is likely the model they’re thinking of. Bringing a sleek, minimalist design, this Tesla is packed with technology – from its huge 15-inch central touchscreen to the ability for semi-autonomous driving. With an electric range of 374 miles on offer, this is an EV you can buy without compromise. Little wonder that it’s currently the UK’s best-selling electric car, and by a noticeable margin.

About Tesla Model 3

Originally a battery manufacturer, Tesla ventured into the world of cars in 2008 with its ‘Roadster’, an electric convertible produced with Lotus. But the breakthrough came in 2012 with the launch of the Model S – a bespoke electric saloon that moved the game forward significantly with its range, performance and technology. The Model X SUV would follow too.

But in 2017 production of the Model 3 commenced as Tesla’s affordable EV, and sales have soared ever since. In fact, it’s now the best-selling electric car across many markets – including the UK.

Why buy a used Model 3?

Electric cars don’t get much better than the Tesla Model 3, which ticks just about every box for an EV. Let’s start with one of the key concerns still with electric cars – range. But, providing you choose the ‘Long Range’ version that’s equipped with a bigger battery, this shouldn’t be any concern. That’s because Tesla claims a seriously impressive electric range of 374 miles, which is one of the longest of any EV on the market.

What’s more, with the Model 3 you also get access to Tesla’s Supercharger network of EV chargers. It’s the only firm to have its own chargers in the UK, and they’re renowned for their reliability and charging speeds – two things not all that common with other networks. These chargers are located up and down the country, with far more planned in the future.

The Model 3’s modern and minimalist design also draws people in, with this Tesla’s distinctive design making it easy to distinguish. Moving inside, the interior is absolutely dominated by a large 15-inch touchscreen, which handles pretty much all key functions for the car. It’s a seriously high-tech affair, and one that many appreciate.

On top of this, the Model 3 is excellent to drive, feeling agile, nimble and fun, and majoring on performance. Even the standard car is able to achieve 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds, but those wanting something sportier should take a look at the ‘Performance’ version. That’s because this is able to hit 60mph (where permitted) in just 3.1 seconds, making it quicker off the line than many supercars.

Model 3 updates

Here’s a short history of the Tesla Model 3, which dates back to 2016.
  • Tesla first revealed the Model 3 as its ‘affordable electric car’ back in April 2016.
  • Production commenced in 2017, though UK cars would not arrive here until the middle of 2019.
  • Tesla would continue to tweak the Model 3 with regular software updates, though a 2021 refresh saw the model get a front end redesign and interior tweaks that included the addition of wireless phone charging and a roomier centre console.

Which used Model 3 should I buy?

Tesla doesn’t offer trim levels as such, but rather different versions with different powertrains and slightly different specs. Equipment highlights as follows.

Tesla Model 3

15-inch touchscreen, electric and heated front seats, faux leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, heated steering wheel, climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, automatic lights and wipers, tinted glass roof, heated rear seats, keyless entry, dash cam, wireless smartphone charging, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range

Same as Model 3, but larger range from increased battery (range grows from 305 to 374 miles)

Tesla Model 3 Performance

20-inch ‘Uberturbine’ alloy wheels, performance brakes, carbon fibre spoiler, aluminium alloy pedals, increased top speed from 145mph to 162mph, Track Mode.

What should I look for when buying a used Model 3?

  • Teslas sometimes suffer from poor build quality, and in particular early Model 3s. Look out for large panel gaps and any signs of scuffed or scratched interior trim.
  • Faux leather upholstery is subject to heavy wear and cracking, particularly on cars with a black ambiance.
  • On cars fitted with a glass roof, look out for any signs of cracking.
