The Toyota AYGO isn't going to turn the heads of anyone looking for a high performance cruiser. But those looking for an affordable, practical car that drives well might feel they've hit the jackpot. A 1.0 litre engine - at 67kg reportedly one of the lightest engines currently on the market - keeps run costs and CO2 emissions down; above 60mpg and under 100g/km, depending on which model you choose. Added to this the fact that there's space for four adults - although boot space is limited - and that the handling is lively and composed around town, there's little at fault in the AYGO.

About Toyota AYGO

Economic, small and stylish, the Toyota AYGO is a car designed with the modern city driver in mind. While this means that it is unlikely to excite anyone looking for a high performance cruise (there is just one, 1.0 litre petrol engine option), it does exactly what it needs to, and does it well.

The sister car to the co-developed Citroen C1 and the Peugeot 107, it has found an audience with both young and old drivers, all keen to looking for a car which is both frugal to run costs and capable to drive.

Why buy a used AYGO?

Released and developed along with the Citroen C1 and the Renault 107, the Toyota AYGO is a car designed to be economic, compact and stylish. While this means it might never going to appeal to anyone looking to do endless motorway journeys, it suits the needs of a city driver excellently.

Like its sister cars, the AYGO doesn't offer a substantial amount of power. Instead, it settles for a 1.0 litre engine which manages to generate enough pull for its very light body, while keeping run costs incredibly low. Excitement isn't necessarily the name of the game behind the AYGO wheel, but the 67bhp and 14 seconds it takes to hit 60mph doesn't feel as restrictive as it does on paper. This is largely due to the 790kg it weighs, but its unlikely many will expect it to perform like an M3.

While this limits its drag racing potential, it does much to improve the car's efficiency. Over 60mpg returns and CO2 emissions under 100g/km in all but a few models make the AYGO an incredibly cheap car to run. This extends into the servicing and maintenance costs too, which are designed to be kept low.

Like the performance, ride and handling aren't the best in the class, but it copes with what is generally expected of it: low-speed city driving. Steering and grip are both good, which does give it a bit of life when in the city, but on less maintained roads the ride can feel a little stiff compared to some of its smoother rivals.

As to be expected, space is limited, but that is not to say that it is non-existent. There is some boot space - which for a small city car is a positive - but at 139 litres its far from cavernous. There is room for four people, but anything longer than a short journey could prove to be uncomfortable.

With Toyota's reputation for reliability, the AYGO's affordability is extended to its maintenance and servicing costs. Along with a decent safety rating, the AYGO is an excellent option for those looking for a frugal, reliable A to B car.

The AYGO was given a facelift in 2009 along with the C1 and 107, which gave the car a new front bumper and grille.

What should I look for when buying a used AYGO?

Check the car for any rust or corrosion. On the AYGO there have been particular complaints that the exhaust back boxes rusts through after just two years.
Some of the most commonly found problems in the AYGO is with the clutch. When driving, check that it doesn't feel heavy, or doesn't produce any noises when depressed. This could mean that it is faulty and might need to be replaced.
A whining noise coming from the car when driving could be a failing timing belt tensioner. If this needs to be replaced it would also be wise to replace the water pump, which is driven by the timing belt.
Check that the brakes are working properly by holding the wheel lightly and stopping to see if the car pulls to one side. If this is the case it could mean that the brakes are failing.
Some AYGOs have suffered from leaks - particularly in the load area. Check that there are no leaks, or stains caused by leaks.
Check to see that the rear windows are secure. In some models the glue holding the hinges can wear, causing the windows to fall out.
