Expert Opinion

After around a decade of uninspiring-looking cars, Toyota returned with a bang in 2016 with the C-HR – a funky-looking crossover that sits beneath the more sensible RAV4 in the brand’s line-up. Standing out in a somewhat saturated class filled with rivals, the C-HR is able to stand out from the crowd. Not least thanks to its efficient hybrid powertrains, which have been offered from the start, but have become the only option on more recent models. Given Toyota’s expertise when it comes to hybrids, it’s no surprise to learn that the C-HR is such a well-rounded effort.

About Toyota C-HR

While models like the Land Cruiser and RAV4 have played a key part in Toyota’s range for some time, the brand was missing a more affordable, smaller and cheaper to run crossover – a segment that was really rising in popularity.

The model to fill that gap was the C-HR. Unveiled in 2016 and reaching showrooms at the start of 2017, it offers a bold design mixed with efficient hybrid powertrains. At the end of 2019, the C-HR was revised to feature purely hybrid setups, with Toyota having a diverse range of electrified models on sale.

Why buy a used C-HR?

The crossover segment is arguably the most popular of all the new car classes, and it can be hard for a new model to find momentum. No such issue has affected the Toyota C-HR, though, with this model quickly becoming a big hit.

Let’s start with its stand-out styling, which fuses a bold design we hadn’t seen from Toyota for some years. It’s almost like a coupe in terms of profile, which is something usually only found on far more expensive SUVs, while sharp lines and large alloy wheels really do make the C-HR look the part, especially in this crowded class.

The C-HR was also far more impressive behind the wheel than the past few Toyotas before it, and the brand has kept this up ever since. It’s not only surprisingly good fun to drive, but also comfortable and just as pleasant around town as it is on the motorway.

Then there are its hybrid powertrains, which are tried-and-tested in the Toyota line-up. Blending swift performance with efficiency, there’s the scope for some very low running costs thanks to the electrification. Though neither hybrid model can travel for any real distance on electric, you don’t have to plug them in like you do other hybrids and fully-electric models, and there’s still scope for lower running costs than what you’d get from a typical petrol or diesel car.

By going for a used model you also escape the C-HR’s quite steep list price, which is noticeably more than rivals like the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur. While used examples are available at quite a noticeable discount, the C-HR is quite a safe bet when it comes to depreciation – particularly hybrid models that are the most in-demand with buyers.

You also get a huge amount of car for your money in terms of equipment, with even entry-level models getting the likes of dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, keyless start and a whole suite of safety technology.

So if you’re looking for a stylish and desirable crossover that will be light on the pocket, the C-HR should certainly be close to the top of your shopping list.

C-HR updates

Here’s a brief history of the Toyota C-HR, which debuted in 2016.
  • Toyota showed off its intentions with the C-HR with a bold concept car at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, which shared key links to the production model.
  • The production version of the C-HR was shown at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, retaining the bold coupe-like styling and hybrid powertrain option of the concept car. First deliveries arrived at the start of 2017.
  • A new Design trim is introduced in June 2018, offering a range of stylish upgrades, but still at an affordable price.
  • Towards the end of 2019, Toyota revised the C-HR with a second more powerful hybrid motor, while at the same time petrol options were discontinued. An upgraded multimedia system was also introduced.
  • Toyota introduces a more aggressive-looking ‘GR Sport’ trim, though does feature a revised suspension setup to give it a slightly sportier drive.

Which used C-HR should I buy?

A range of trim levels are available on the C-HR, with the highlights as follows.

Toyota C-HR Icon

17-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, keyless start, leather steering wheel, electric parking brake, reversing camera, 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring. Toyota Safety Sense 2 brings pre-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, high beam assist.

Toyota C-HR Design

18-inch black diamond-cut alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, satellite navigation, park assist, heated front seats, keyless entry, automatic wipers, blue ambient lighting and Satin Grey Deco interior detailing.

Toyota C-HR Excel

18-inch dark chrome alloy wheels, full black leather upholstery, electric front seats, adaptive LED headlights, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.

Toyota C-HR GR Sport

In addition to the Design, the GR Sport features 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, GR Sport bodyklt, tinted adaptive LED headlights, perforated leather steering wheel, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot warning.

What should I look for when buying a used C-HR?

  • Most cars have diamond-cut alloy wheels, so look out for any kerb damage as it can be expensive to sort.
  • More owners than expected have reported windscreens cracking, usually from the top. Look out for any signs of damage.
  • Largely a very reliable car, and one that comes with a generous warranty. Cars that are serviced annually at Toyota can also benefit from up to 10 years of warranty cover.
