Vauxhall’s Grandland first arrived in 2017, tempting buyers with its smart styling and easygoing nature. Those looking for something greener might be tempted by the plug-in hybrid options, which first arrived in 2020. Since receiving a mid-life update in late 2021, the Grandland X looks more stylish than ever, while the interior has really stepped up a notch – digital dials and a touchscreen are now included as standard.

About Vauxhall Grandland

Arriving as an indirect replacement for the Antara, the Grandland was the third and final model in Vauxhall’s SUV range. It’s the largest of the lot too – offering more interior space and making it particularly well-suited to families. Arriving in 2017 with a choice of engines, Vauxhall expanded the range in 2018 with a top-spec Ultimate car, bringing features like adaptive cruise control and a panoramic camera.

In 2021 the Grandland was given a thorough update, gaining styling elements seen on the new Mokka and Astra. Inside, it benefits from the brand’s Pure Panel interior layout, which merges together a digital cockpit and touchscreen – measuring up to 12 and 10 inches respectively. Advanced Pixel LED lights and night vision also expanded Vauxhall's advanced technologies.

Why buy a used Grandland?

As Vauxhall’s largest crossover, the main reason to choose it is for its practicality. Though it’s still under 4.5 metres in length, the Grandland’s interior remains roomy, with the boot measuring 514 litres with the rear seats upright, or a generous 1,652 litres once they’re folded. It means it’s considerably larger than a traditional family hatchback like the Astra. There’s also plenty of rear seat room too, with excellent legroom and headroom. If you have taller teenage children, for example, the Grandland will prove to be very useful.

It’s also rather stylish to look at, regardless of age. With sharp crease lines, a neat front grille and LED daytime running lights that double up as indicators, the Grandland X certainly offers plenty of street cred. All models also get alloy wheels as standard, while higher-spec trims benefit from additional gloss black styling trim and a cool two-tone black roof.

While we’re on the subject of trims, it’s worth noting that all versions come with plenty of equipment for the money. Even entry-level SE cars feature a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and front and rear parking sensors.

There’s also a broad range of options under the bonnet to choose from, including petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid. Let’s start with the latter, which is great for those wanting to bring their running costs down. With its claimed 39-mile electric range, you’ll have to spend very little running it if you regularly charge it up and do the majority of miles on battery power. That said, both the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel models should be quite frugal too – particularly the diesel, which Vauxhall says can return up to 54.3mpg.

Grandland updates

Here’s a short history of the Vauxhall Grandland, which dates back to 2017.

Following the launch of the Mokka X and Crossland X, Vauxhall introduced the larger Grandland X in 2017 – rounding off the brand’s SUV range.
For 2018 the Grandland X received a new high-spec Ultimate trim level, while an optional IntelliGrip traction control system brought greater ability to the model.
In 2020 the range expanded with a new plug-in hybrid. Originally offered with a powerful Hybrid4 version producing 300bhp, a more affordable 225bhp was later introduced.
The Grandland was given a mid-life update in 2021, receiving the latest exterior styling and interior tech from Vauxhall’s latest models. You might also notice that the ‘X’ was dropped from its name.

What should I look for when buying a used Grandland?

With many Grandlands being bought as family cars, look out for any marked or missing trim, especially in the rear seats.
Higher-spec Grandland models come with large diamond-cut alloys, which are quite susceptible to kerbing damage. Look out for any signs of damage, as it may be expensive to replace.
The infotainment system has been known to have a few glitches, so make sure that all inputs work properly.
