The Insignia was launched at the British Motor Show in 2008 and a year later had scooped the 2009 European Car of the Year. The reasons? Outside there's more than a hint of something more expensive and inside there's plenty of expensive stuff to satisfy even the most curious mind – MP3, CD, Digital, Bluetooth, SatNav, USB, Cruise, tunnel detection, tyre pressure monitoring, I could go on… the Insignia does. The handling is perfectly responsive and the boot offers over 1000 litres of space, outmatched only in size by a MASSIVE fuel tank that can, in the case of the diesels, get you up to 750 miles on a single tank! Also, consider running costs, fixing this car is unlikely to cost you too much. It's one of the most accessible and straightforward cars around.

About Vauxhall Insignia

The Vauxhall Insignia was unveiled in 2008 at the British Motor Show and found quick success with its style and practicality. The following year it was named the European Car of the Year, and from 2009 onwards has regularly been one of the top selling cars in the UK.

Competitively priced and featuring a ride to rival some of the best in its class, the Insignia is arguably the best large family car Vauxhall has ever produced, and one that continues to go from strength to strength.

Why buy a used Insignia?

The Insignia was launched in 2008, replacing the widely criticised Vectra, and signalled an intent by Vauxhall to seriously compete for a share of the family car market. Immediately popular among buyers as well as critics, the Insignia was named European Car of the Year in 2009 - the same year it outsold the market leading Ford Mondeo.

With a quality finish and a clear emphasis on improving their luxury elements, it could be said that the Insignia stands apart from the Vauxhall range. Inside it is refined, comfortable and features a range of high spec equipment, yet still manages to leave space for a sizeable cabin that offers plenty of room for both passengers and luggage. Unfortunately, the rear seats don't fold down completely flat, but with a boot space of 520 litres (with the rear seats upright), there is enough to satisfy most storage needs.

Although arguably less refined than some of its competitors, the Insignia's ride is smooth, and is aided by an impressive suspension system and a choice of either two or four-wheel drive. Compared to some competitors in its class, handling can feel a little lethargic, but this is by design. At high speeds the Insignia remains stable and composed as a result, far from the temperamental behaviour a more nimble, faster handling car might offer. On the motorway, as a high speed cruising car the Insignia is near its best.

The performance options on offer are geared to highlight the versatility of the Insignia, so engine variations are numerous. Among them, like in the rest of its class, the diesels are the most popular, offering a mix of both power and economy - especially in the models fitted with ecoFLEX technology. The 2.0 litre 158bhp diesel is probably the best all round, pulling strongly from low revs, and returning miles per gallon of around 50 without ecoFLEX, and 60mpg with. The emissions are similarly reduced by the eco technology, which reduces the figure from 149g/km to 116g/km, lowering the Insignia's road tax cost significantly.

Being a popular fleet car, there is an emphasis on low running costs, but does also result in a swift depreciation in value - undesirable if you are buying new, but useful in the second hand market. Along with reasonable maintenance and servicing costs, it is a recent, but serious contender in the family executive market.

The Vauxhall Insignia was first launched in 2008 as a replacement for the Vauxhall Vectra at the British International Motor Show in London.
The following year the car was named as the European Car of the Year, and was the ninth best selling car in the UK, outselling its closest rival, the Ford Mondeo.
A high-performance model Insignia was introduced in 2009, which featured a 2.8 litre turbocharged V6 engine.
That same year Vauxhall released a range of ecoFLEX diesel engines which reduced CO2 emissions and improved fuel consumption.

What should I look for when buying a used Insignia?

Have a look around the exterior of the car for signs of rust, corrosion and any other body damage. The front fog lights are positioned very close to the ground, and so are prone to scuffs and scratches from road debris.
Check for any signs of water leaking in through the doors. This has proved a common problem in some models.
The heated front seating mechanisms have been known to fail, so check that this is working in any model you are looking at. If not, it should be fixed before any purchase is made.
Some Insignias have had problems with their electrics failing, so make sure to test that these are in working order by turning on any air conditioning, lights and radios, and testing any electric windows while the engine is running, and when it is not.
When you start any diesel models, check to see that the DPF light on the dashboard comes on and then turns off. If it doesn't, drive the car for around fifteen to twenty minutes in third gear, which should hopefully burn off any blockages on the DPF and cause the light to switch off. If this is not the case, the DPF may be damaged and will need to be replaced.
Some Insignias have suffered from problems with their Dual Mass Flywheel, which you can test for by revving the car while in neutral. If you notice a lot of vibration, it could mean problems, and could possibly need expensive repair work.
