VW have recently launched a MK7 hatchback with two diesel engines, 1.6l and 2.0l, that combine those classic Golf good looks with the sort of fuel efficiency that also turns heads. Even in the entry version, the power is constant and quiet, and the handling comfortable and assured. As you would expect from those clever German designers, the new 5.8 inch entry-level infotainment touchscreen is logical and easy to use, there's digital radio and USB connections, space enough for four hungry adults and 380 litres in the boot. The most impressive statistics, however, belong to the engine. The 1.6 engine can travel over 74 miles per gallon and emits 99g/km of CO2 (no London Congestion Charge and low tax) while the quicker 2.0 offers 106g/km and 68.9km. The Volkswagen Golf TDi sets a new benchmark in its class and competes very well with expensive rivals in other sectors

About Volkswagen Golf TDi

One of the leading variations of a car which is widely considered to be head and shoulders above its rivals, the VW Golf TDi is something quite special. This doesn't necessarily mean that it is the best Golf around however, but it certainly does offer the best all-round mix of drive, performance and crucially, economy.

Consistently growing ever more efficient, the seventh generation, which it now finds itself in, places the Golf TDi into an all new level of superiority in the hatchback market.

Why buy a used Golf TDi?

First introduced to the third generation Golf in 1991, the TDi engine is one of the leading options in the entire Golf range. While it offers the most economical of run costs in the range, it does come with the compromise of reducing performance slightly. Relative to other Golfs, that might offer a problem, but in comparison to its rival diesel hatches, it stands as arguably the best in its class.

In terms of specifications, the TDi succeeds in providing a balance between all aspects the Golf excels at - generally considered to be all of them. In the most recent Mk7 Golf, engine options are either a 1.6 litre or the ubiquitous 2.0 litre 148bhp, which between them offer the best all-round specifications in the range.

The main advantage the TDi variant holds over its competent Golf siblings, is that it offers the best efficiency. Fuel consumption ranges over the TDi generations from an impressive 56mpg in the Mk3, to a very impressive 68mpg in the latest Mk7. CO2 emissions are also reduced, which on the 1.6 TDi sit at 99g/km, crucially placing in under the road tax exempt threshold.

What the excellent efficiency and low run costs do result in however, is a slight loss of performance compared to rest of the range. This is only relative though, as the 10.7 seconds it takes the Mk7 TDi to hit 62mph is not exactly lethargic, nor is the 8.6 seconds it takes with the larger 2.0 engine.

As it is a Golf, handling and ride is second to none, being both refined and calm at high speeds, and willing and able once you put a bit more into it on trickier roads. The petrol engine Golfs might have the slight edge by being better weighted as a result of their lighter engines, but put up against any in its class, its ability to ride like a car far bigger and more luxurious than it actually is, while maintaining an enthusiasm for vigorous driving places it well ahead.

There are cars which offer a more exciting design and those which offer more luxury and perhaps more power, but few excel in all areas like the Golf does. Of those, none are as cost efficient as the TDi, which means it really does sit at the pinnacle of its hotly competitive market.

In 1992 the VW Golf was named European Car of the Year - it later won the award a second time, making it only the second car to have been named ECOTY twice.
The fourth generation Golf, again featuring the TDi option, was launched in 1997 and in 1999 entered the top ten best selling cars in the UK. A list it remains on right up to present day.
A fifth generation Golf was introduced in 2003, and was followed by a sixth generation in 2008 which replaced the Pumpe/Duse Unit Injector system with common rail direct injection in TDi engines.
The Golf Mk7 was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2012, and was introduced to UK markets in 2013 - the same year it won the European Car of the Year for the second time.

What should I look for when buying a used Golf TDi?

Make sure to conduct a thorough inspection of the car's exterior, making note of any rust or corrosion. In particular look around problem areas such as the sills, tailgate and doors.
On 2004 models, listen for a police siren type noise coming from the engine, which will become more noticeable at low revs, or when accelerating and de-accelerating. This could indicate a faulty turbo, which will require a costly repair.
Some TDi Golfs have experienced problems with their dual mass flywheel. To check for this, listen for any knocking noises coming from the engine which disappears once the clutch is depressed - this would indicate it was failing.
Some 2005 TDi models have reported problems with driver door controls not working and the car not registering the door as closed. This could be down to faulty electrics in the door and shouldn't be too expensive to rectify.
Check to see that necessary upkeep has been carried out, such as the cam belt and the water pump being replaced after 80,000 miles or four years.
Diesels are heavy on oil, so make sure that you check the dipstick to see that the oil level is midway between full and empty. Look for evidence that this has been well maintained, and check for leaks by inspecting under the car for any puddles of oil.
