Expert Opinion

One of Volkswagen’s most important cars in recent years, the firm even ranks the ID.3 in line with the Golf in terms of value for this German brand. Though not VW’s first EV, the ID.3 established the firm’s standalone ‘ID’ range of electric models. It’s nippy to drive, offers quite futuristic looks, while the broad range of versions to choose between means there’s something to suit most, whether you need a model that can do upwards of 300 miles or not.

About Volkswagen ID.3

One of Volkswagen’s most eagerly-anticipated cars in years, the first concept for the ID.3 (which wasn’t numbered at the time) was shown at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Its name would be confirmed in 2019, with production versions eventually arriving in September 2020, after being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Initially launched with a single battery pack and in a Launch Edition grade, Volkswagen expanded the line-up with a new entry-level trim, with a smaller battery and less powerful option to bring the ID.3’s price down. At the other end of the spectrum, a ‘Tour’ option was introduced, which – as its name suggests – is meant for more long-distance travel thanks to its greater electric range.

Why buy a used ID.3?

There was a lot riding on the ID.3’s shoulders, but thankfully this electric hatchback has proven to be an impressive option.

A key reason to buy it is for all the options available. While other EVs are only available with a slim selection of battery/power options, the ID.3’s line-up is broad, almost mirroring the variety of options you get when buying a more conventional car. It means that, whether you need a long or shorter range, there’s something for you, with the top Tour option offering a seriously impressive electric range of 335 miles – one of the longest of any electric car at the lower end of the spectrum.

The other surprise in store with the ID.3 is just how good it is to drive. Unlike typical hatchbacks, the ID.3 is rear-wheel-drive, and makes it really quite good fun to drive. Strong performance – regardless of which version you go for – also means you can quite comfortably overtake traffic or join a main road with ease.

It’s also one of the most practical hatchbacks around, with Volkswagen not being restricted by the usual constraints when it comes to packaging thanks to the bespoke electric car platform. It really is impressively spacious, with loads of cubby holes and plenty of rear seat space, while the boot measures a useful 385 litres.

Regardless of which version you go for, standard equipment levels are generous. Highlights on even entry-level cars include 18-inch alloy wheels, 10-colour ambient interior lighting, adaptive cruise control and a large 10-inch touchscreen.

ID.3 updates

Here’s a short history of the ID.3, from concept through to production.

Volkswagen first showed its intent for its electric ID range, by showing a concept at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
In May 2019, after various teasers, Volkswagen confirmed the use of the ID.3 name, while showcasing a camouflaged version.
The ID.3 finally made its world debut in September 2019, being the first VW Group model to use the brand’s dedicated MEB electric car platform. First cars would be delivered to customers in September 2020.
The ID.3 range expanded early in 2021 with the addition of a less powerful motor, bringing the price down. This would be extended later in the year with the option of a smaller 45kWh battery.

What should I look for when buying a used ID.3?

With the ID.3 only launching in September 2020, not a huge amount is known about its reliability, though the main thing to be aware of is that the car uses Volkswagen’s latest software – a VW dealer should be able to tell you if it’s running the most current updates.
It’s important to note that the vast majority of ID.3’s don’t come as standard with alloy wheels, and that they were in fact optional. They’re well worth choosing if you want extra street cred, though just be aware that the majority of designs are diamond-cut, and can be very expensive if they ever need refurbishing after being kerbed.
After this, the main thing just to think about is just how much range you’ll need, as there’s no point splashing out on a far more expensive version fitted with a larger battery if you’re never – or hardly ever – going to need to do that many miles. We reckon that even the 45kWh battery version, with its circa 200-mile range, should be plenty for most. Don’t forget all ID.3s have a battery that can be rapidly charged when you’re on the go, too.
