Expert Opinion

Like many of its competitors in the crossover market, the VW Tiguan is a car which is best suited to driving on the road, despite it being a 4X4 and having the rugged capabilities of an SUV. Yet, the advantage of not being designed as a full multi-surface vehicle is that it is swift, sporty and responsive while on the road, at the same time offering good grip and a comfortable ride. It shares a large portion of its engineering with its VW label mate the Golf, which is never a bad thing, but with extra space and four wheel drive, the Tiguan is a more practical and versatile car. While it might not be as exciting a choice as the Golf, it is perhaps a more logical one.

Volkswagen was one of the firms ahead of the curve when it came to introducing crossovers, with the Tiguan being launched in 2007 as the brand’s more lifestyle-oriented model. Appealing to those that had outgrown a Golf, it quickly became a big hit for the firm.

A second generation Tiguan launched in 2016, bringing with it a more practical interior, new technology features and a more modern design. It has continued this Volkswagen’s success, with more than six million versions being produced to date – a remarkable effort.

Why buy a used Tiguan?

With models like the Tiguan often being bought when people outgrow traditional family hatchbacks, it’s reassuring to know that the Tiguan will very much fit the bill. Though both first- and second-generation models are both practical, the latest car is the roomiest, with this version offering a huge 615-litre boot, which is one of the largest in this class. You also get sliding second row seats, allowing you to increase or reduce rear seat space, depending on your priorities.

If you need more space, you could always consider the Tiguan Allspace, which is a bit larger in terms of size, and allows Volkswagen to squeeze in two extra seats into the boot. Though they’re not very useful for adults, they’re ideal for kids, and certainly extends its appeal.

Another reason you should choose the Tiguan is for its build quality. If you’re using this VW as a family car, you want to make sure it’s pretty sturdy, and it’s certainly impressively well screwed together with the front of the car’s cabin having an especially upmarket feel. A large touchscreen is found on the majority of versions, while higher-spec cars also get an excellent set of digital dials.

SUVs are often marked down for not driving as well as normal hatchbacks, but the Tiguan is certainly one of the more impressive options behind the wheel. Avoid the largest wheels and sports suspension and you get a very comfortable and relaxed driving experience, though it’s still more than up to the task if you want to enjoy yourself more when a few more corners appear.

The Tiguan also looks the part, too, with newer models benefitting from sharp LED lights (regardless of trim). But if you want the most street cred, it’s the top-spec R-Line trim you want to go for. These benefit from a sportier styling pack, larger alloy wheels and a racier interior as well. If you’d like the performance to go with that sportiness, the flagship Tiguan R is the one to go for. Packing a 316bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre engine under the bonnet, it lets this SUV sprint to 60mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Tiguan updates

Here’s a short timeline of the Volkswagen Tiguan, which has been around since 2007.

Volkswagen revealed the Tiguan in June 2007, offering a stylish model equipped with four-wheel-drive as standard initially. It would reach showrooms in February 2008.
A sportier-looking R-Line model was launched in 2009, with a value-packed Match version arriving a year later.
The Tiguan was facelifted in 2012, introducing more modern styling and a raft of new technologies.
The second-generation Tiguan arrived in 2016, sitting on a new platform and boasting more efficient engines, greater driver assistance systems and a much bolder look.
Volkswagen introduced a longer 7-seat version of the Tiguan in 2018, known as the Allspace.
The Tiguan was then revised in 2020, with the model getting a sharper design and new technologies like Matrix LED headlights. A hot ‘R’ model would also be introduced, using the same 316bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine as the brilliant Golf R hot hatchback.

What should I look for when buying a used Tiguan?

DSG automatic gearboxes can be troublesome sometimes, so check gear changes are quiet and smooth when test driving.
Touchscreen can freeze, so check it’s working as it should, including all the features within it like satellite navigation and phone connection.
‘Kangarooing’ issues initially reported with the 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine. Volkswagen recalled models and gave them a software update. Make sure engines are smooth when driving, and don’t buy a car still displaying problems.
