Expert Opinion

Since the late 1990s, Volvo has been manufacturing cars which confound their traditional reputation of producing boxy, somewhat boring saloons. The car which did more than most to set out this new direction was the XC60, a crossover SUV pitched between a 4X4, a coupé and an estate, which manages to be functional, exciting and comfortable - all without a hint of boredom or boxiness. It doesn't provide the same luxury as the BMW X5 or the Audi Q5, nor the rambunctiousness of the more capable Land Rover range, but as an affordable to run compact SUV which is stylish, practical and reliable, it is a stand out option.

About Volvo XC60

Volvo expanded its SUV range in 2008 with the XC60 in 2008 – a stylish and well-made model to rival the BMW X3. Produced at a time when Ford owned Volvo, it shared some components with the Land Rover Freelander, though was developed largely by Volvo. It was facelifted in 2013, when it gained a redesigned front end, a new grille and painted trim replacing the previous black plastic cladding.

A second-generation XC60 arrived in 2017, being completely overhauled with a new look, an impressive range of safety technology and also a plug-in hybrid version that helps to drive down running costs. It continues to be one of the most premium and comfortable models in its class.

Why buy a used XC60?

There are a range of reasons to choose the XC60, but up at the top is safety. It’s an area where Volvo consistently raises the bar, and whether you choose a first- or second-generation car, you’ll be driving one of the safest cars on the road. New models, for example, are available to not only brake but steer to avoid collisions and feature various technologies to stop a driver from leaving the road.

If you value style, you should also consider the XC60, as it’s always been a stunning-looking car from its inception. Again, it’s the latest model that really impresses, with cool details such as moulded wheel arches, sharp LED lighting and a neat front grille arguably making this Volvo look far more appealing than many of its rivals.

That same glamour continues to the XC60’s interior, which manages to be both luxurious and modern at the same time. The likes of a nine-inch touchscreen and digital dials are both fantastic to use, while certain elements like standard-fit leather upholstery and even a crystal gear knob really add to the plush feel you get from the model. At the same time, it’s also roomy and spacious, and ideal if you’re considering it as a family car. Granted, it’s not a 7-seater like the XC90, but if you don’t need those additional seats, it’s arguably a better option.

The new plug-in hybrids are also a great choice, both for private buyers or if drivers are considering them as a company car. With a real-world electric range of around 25 miles, there’s scope for very low running costs. At the same time, its performance is also brisk thanks to the combination of petrol and electricity. A more conventional range of petrol and diesels are still available, though.

XC60 updates

Here’s a brief history of the Volvo XC60, dating back to 2007 when the model was first shown as a concept car.

Volvo gave us a first glimpse at the XC60 with a 2007 concept car, showcasing a sleeker and more stylish look.
A year later the production model would be shown, retaining the concept car-like styling and an impressive safety record. It was one of the first cars to be fitted with an automatic emergency braking system.
In 2009, Volvo introduced a front-wheel-drive XC60, which helped to reduce the model’s running costs.
For 2010 sportier styling was introduced thanks to an R-Design trim level.
The XC60 received its first noticeable facelift in 2013, with a redesign helping to give the model a more modern look.
The second-generation XC60 was unveiled in 2017, boasting a stunning new design, impressive safety technology and a plug-in hybrid powertrain option.
Volvo revised the XC60 in 2021, introducing slight styling tweaks, a new Android-powered infotainment system and upgraded safety technology.

What should I look for when buying a used XC60?

Electric boots can sometimes not work as they should, due to a problem with the struts. Check the boot closes and opens smoothly.
Manufacturer recalls on the latest XC60 have included issues with the automatic emergency braking and a very rare potential engine fires on 2.0-litre diesel models.
Look for any bodywork and wheel damage – due to the XC60 being a premium model, repairs could be pricey.
