Most people’s motivation for buying a campervan or motorhome is a desire to travel almost wherever and whenever they choose. Owning a vehicle with facilities for sleeping, cooking and relaxing allows couples and families to take off with ease, making them ideal for both impromptu and planned getaways. You may also wish to buy a motorhome to enjoy a home-from-home feel while holidaying or travelling long distances. They offer a significant comfort upgrade over traditional camping, so owners can enjoy longer breaks without craving home comforts or being deterred by bad weather. This advantage is especially evident when looking into luxury motorhomes that come equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Investing in a second-hand campervan or motorhome also allows for flexibility and cost savings in the long term. Though purchase and running costs need to be factored in, drivers can save money on accommodation and meals out while still experiencing popular destinations.

  • Why buy a motorhome?

    There are many different options available in the used motorhome market, from compact campervans suitable for everyday use to much larger vehicles for long touring trips.

    Size is a crucial consideration - you’ll need enough space to suit your travel plans, without the vehicle becoming a burden to drive and park. For this reason, it’s wise to test drive motorhomes before committing to a purchase. Larger, heavier vehicles can require lower speeds and extra driving licences in some cases.

    Interior layout is another important factor when researching used campervans and motorhomes for sale. How much room do you want for sleeping, relaxing, cooking and storage?   • Which motorhome should I buy?

    The campervan and motorhome market has grown significantly in recent years as more seek to explore the UK rather than jet off abroad, and it means the number of options on the market is greater than it has ever been. From vehicle manufacturer conversions like the Volkswagen California through to home builds and huge motorhomes that are almost a home on wheels, the choice is extensive. In fact, if you can think of any van, there’s a good chance there will be a campervan version of it available, either officially or aftermarket.

    If you want a high-quality conversion that you know you can rely on, you should look out for an official manufacturer-backed conversion, with key stand-out models including the Volkswagen California, Ford Transit Nugget and Mercedes-Benz V-Class Marco Polo. These were all models bought from a main dealer originally. If you’re less fussed about that, there are plenty of very credible conversion companies, while there are also some fantastic DIY home builds too. Many of the larger motorhomes are also based on Fiat’s large Ducato van, along with its sibling Peugeot Expert and Citroen Relay models, too.

  • What should I look for when buying motorhomes?

    There is a lot of difference between a good motorhome and a bad one, and the thing you should look at first is the quality. This can often be the decider between how much you’ll pay, and providing your budget can stretch, it’s worth paying for a good conversion that feels well done and built to last. Also make sure it’s got all the facilities you need and don’t splash out on a van with features you’re unlikely to ever use. Key bits to look out for include the kitchen, toilet, seating and whether you want elements like a pop-up roof, along with any technology you want – some of the latest vans use a smart metre-like touchscreen to control the van’s functions, for example.

    Crucially, you need to think about how many people need sleeping space, as this is a quick way of deciding if a van is fit for purpose or not. After this, you should do all the key checks you should do on any vehicle – looking at the mechanicals, look out for any signs of bodywork damage and check any equipment on the vehicle works as it should. Due to the number of things that could go wrong with a campervan, it’s worth having it mechanically inspected before buying, especially for the safety side of things.
