Of the few premium hatchbacks on the market, the Audi A3 is arguably the best, and has been since first being launched in 1996. With an immaculately designed cabin which highlights just how good ergonomic simplicity can be, and a smooth ride which favours stability over agility, it is the comfort and refinement of the Audi A3 which makes it shine. The 2.0 TDi offers an ideal mix of performance and efficiency (all between 50 and 65mpg), while the petrol options up the power stakes for the speed-freaks. Its 365 litre boot might not be market leading, but it's the comfort and quality of the cabin rather than its ability to cart luggage around that makes it stand out.

About Audi A3

Sturdy, refined, and with a touch of class, the Audi A3 is the perennial luxury hatchback, and has been the leader in its class since it was first release in 1996.

Although the first generation struggled to get off the ground, the subsequent two Audi has spawned has seen the car develop into a genuine class leader. Now into its third, it remains a car continually striving to offer a better drive, to be better equipped, and to continue its dominance of the premium hatchback market.

Why buy a used A3?

There's much to admire in the Audi A3, particularly in its third and latest generation. A mix of sophistication, economy and practicality, it sits on the border between the executive and a hatchback classes, adding a touch of luxury to the supermini market.

As a product of German manufacturing, the A3 is solid and well-built across all generations. Inside the A3 the feel is that of ergonomic simplicity, which while coming very well equipped (air conditioning, start/stop, colour screen trip computer all come as standard on the latest generation), does so in a tastefully refined way that focuses on quality finishings in every corner. This is nowhere as apparent as in the most recent generation, which manages to up the style and comfort levels of its predecessors without doing the same to the price tag. Passenger room is very good in the cabin while the boot, at 365 litres in the third generation (425, if you opt for the saloon), is adequate.

The A3 ride favours the comfortable and stable more than the exciting or particularly lively. The impressive grip and forgiving suspension found in the latest generation eradicates the earlier models' tendency to transfer the bumps and grinds in the roads a bit too easily. At high speed cruising it remains calm and comfortable, yet this can sometimes mean it isn't the sportiest hatchback on the market. However, that is not to say that it doesn't have any life, the 7.1 seconds it takes the 1.4 TFSI petrol to hit 62mph certainly doesn't make it a slouch.

Run costs remain good for a car of its size and quality, and are helped by the fact that there is a good range from which to choose. The second generation's 1.6 litre diesel offers CO2 emissions under the tax exempt 100g/km threshold, and returns of 74mpg. For a mix of power and efficiency however, the 2.0 diesel third generation car offers up 44bhp more with minimal penalties in terms of fuel efficiency - a claimed 68mpg.

Audi's reliability and safety record adds to the car's appeal, which in a relatively recently competitive market, puts it way ahead of its rivals in the premium hatchback market.

The Audi A3 was launched in 1996, and has consistently been one of the leading cars in the premium hatchback market.

Here is a brief look at the Audi A3's history, starting in 1996.

The first Audi A3 was launched in 1996, and was built using the A4 platform, sharing much with its contemporary the Volkswagen Golf Mk4.
In 1999 the A3 range was expanded to include a 1.8 turbo 180 PS, and a 1.9 TDi diesel with Unit Injector technology and a variable geometry turbocharger.
At the 2003 Geneva Motor Show the second generation Audi A3 was released, which was built on the new PQ35 platform and featured a more spacious interior and Fuel Stratified Injection petrol engines.
2008 saw a number of redesigns carried out on the A3, which included restyling the nose and tail and introducing common rail 2.0 TDi engines.
The sporty A3 TDi Clubsport quattro was released in 2008, and featured improved performance as well as a more environmentally friendly engine.
The third generation A3 was launched at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and was based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. This new generation included a new entertainment system, cruise control and MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.
In 2013 the third generation A3 was named What Car? magazine's Car of the Year, as well as their Small Family Car of the Year.

What should I look for when buying a used A3?

Inside the cabin, make sure that the interior light switches off when the doors are closed, as some A3s have reported this as faulty, and generally results in the entire lock assembly being replaced.
Have a look to see that necessary upkeep work has been carried out, such as changing the cam belt every 75,000 miles, or five years.
Check that all windows open and close fully, as some A3s have reported having faulty window clips which malfunction and stop the windows from properly closing.
There have been reports of some ABS pump module faults in A3s built between 2004 and 2008, which causes the ABS light to come on permanently on the dashboard. Make sure this isn't the case on any model you are looking at. This is normally only with the sensor however, and not with the full ABS system, although it is still important to double check this.
To check wear on the brake pads hold the steering wheel lightly while stopping and see if the car pulls to one side. This would indicate one side is wearing down.
Some A3s - particularly any with turbo - have reported problems with the MAF (mass air flow) metre, which you can check by making sure that the car idles smoothly, and does not suffer power inconsistencies.
Again on turbo A3s, listen for any fluttering in the engine when changing gears, as this could be a sign of a faulty divertor valve. This is a relatively simple repair however, and is not damaging to the engine, but does limit its power.
Check to see that the car doesn't over-rev when the clutch is depressed, as there have been reports of the clutch pedal switch malfunctioning and causing this.
