Expert Opinion

The Juke is a relative newcomer to UK roads but marks a real success story both for drivers of the mini-Crossover and for the UK plant who produce the vehicle for the whole of Europe. The Juke is all about easy, sporty performance - the top lights aid visibility and the headlamps reference vintage rally cars. In the cabin, five foldable seats offer comfort and, in front wheel drive models, additional storage underneath. The dash provides plenty for the driver to consider - as well as a tachometer and speed display there's fuel efficiency and an odometer, i-Pod connectivity, GPS, rear view camera screen and Bluetooth. In most models, Nissan's I-CON offers climate control and normal/sport/eco driver modes. Engines range from a 1.5 diesel (offering an impressive 57.6 mpg) to a 1.6 petrol.

One of the most visually striking cars to arrive on UK roads over the past few years, the Nissan Juke is a stylish and fun motor which has found instant success from those looking to put some excitement back into driving.

There are times when it may not be the most practical car, but the Juke does offer impressive handling and a comfortable ride, and so it's no surprise that it is one of the most popular crossovers available today.

Why buy a used Juke?

Nissan have been known in the past for producing reliable, consistently good cars. But more than anything their recent history has shown that they are not afraid to push the boundaries of what can be done within the realm of car design. The Nissan Juke certainly falls into this category. With the emphasis on being fun and quirky, it has proved to be an instant hit in the crossover class.

Bug-eyed headlights and a wide, rounded bonnet give the Juke a very unique look that continues to the pronounced wheel arches and wing mirrors. While this might put the Juke into a category of car that is likely to appeal to similarly bold and outlandish people, it does provide a breath of fresh air onto the roads. Inside the styling is similar, but with a more refined and relaxed approach than the exterior, it gives the Juke's inside a far calmer and functional feel.

But aside from its looks the Juke offers a comfortable and fun drive. Although it bears closest resemblance to a SUV, the Juke's handling is closer to that of a supermini. The car remains calm and stable through corners and twists, while the Juke Nismo model comes with a few sportier tweaks to give it a bit more speed and heavier steering.

The Juke offers good space and comfort for the driver, but when it comes to passenger and luggage space it is no market leader. With boot space of around 250 litres, it sits very much in an average position in its class, somewhere it finds itself in again with regards to running costs.The 1.5 dCi returns 55mpg and emits 124g/km of CO2, which puts it firmly in the middle of its class. Resale costs are good though, with used Jukes finding high demand. While this doesn't always make them initially affordable, it does mean that very little value is lost on your car at resale.

The Nissan Juke was unveiled in 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show in March and was launched in the UK later that year.
In Japan, where the Juke was first sold, orders in the first month surpassed Nissan's expectations by nearly ten times.
Sales in Europe during 2010 exceeded initial expectations to a similar extent, totalling at around 30,000.
The Nissan Juke wins the Best Crossover award from Parkers in 2012.

What should I look for when buying a used Juke?

Take a walk around the outside of the car and check for any signs of rust, corrosion or shoddy repair work. Check for different colour panels or paintwork, which would signify previous damage and respray.
Check all doors, boot and bonnet open as they should, and make sure all are properly insulated/lined.
Have a look at the tyres - including the spare - and make sure they have sufficient tread. You don't want to leave with a good condition used car but instantly have to fork out for a brand new set of tyres.
Get under the bonnet and have a look for any leakages and that there is no damage to the engine (a thick, white substance underneath the oil cap could be a sign of head gasket damage).
Take it out for a test drive, checking that the air conditioning, electric windows and radio systems are working.
Nissan is a brand synonymous with reliability, and the Juke is no exception. Make sure to look over these certain aspects and you should end up with a car in good condition.
