The Kuga, on British roads since 2008, is a modern, eye-catching SUV Crossover that balances real in-car comfort and with on-road agility. All three engines, 2.5 turbo, 2.0 diesel and 2.0 diesel 4x4, house excellent suspension and, particularly in the all-wheel drive models, offer smooth rides even off-road. The Kuga corners well, hugging roads, while driver visibility is superb thanks to an elevated ride position in a cabin that's well-equipped, particularly at the Zetec trim which offers alloys, AC, keyless ignition. Front, side and curtain airbags and ABS as standard means there's plenty of safety coverage too. Stylish, safe and smooth, the Kuga is everything the modern driver, particularly with a family, could demand.

Emerging on the market in 2008, the Kuga has been an extremely popular addition to Ford’s haul of sports utility vehicles, being widely praised for its hatchback-like handling.

A versatile medium-sized SUV, the Ford Kuga crossover comprises responsive handling, comfortable suspension, economical engines and both front and four-wheel drive. Rival to the high selling Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Qashqai, the Ford Kuga is a well-rounded choice with a competitive price tag.

Why buy a used Kuga?

The Kuga is a fantastic addition to Ford’s already impressive lineup of SUV crossovers. Released in the European market in 2008, the original version boasted first-rate drivability, while the revamped model appeals more to the US market, hence more tech, boot space and leg room.

The Kuga looks like a tough off-roader but handles like a hatchback, thanks to it being built using the same platform as the third-gen Ford Focus. A bugbear of the original model was that it lacked space in the back, but Ford has addressed this in the updated Kuga in an effort to make it more of a globally appealing SUV. The body of the newer version is therefore a good few inches longer at the back, accommodating for a much bigger boot as well as providing extra leg room for passengers and their nifty reclining seats.

The interior design is modern and the gloss black finish gives it an upmarket charm, however the dash is cluttered, which might prove complicated to manage while driving. As with the Focus, the Kuga is available with Ford’s latest safety equipment including active city stop, lane keeping aid and the option of a blind-spot monitoring system and electronic anti-skid control. A neat trick on some models is a sensor hidden beneath the rear bumper that enables keyless access to the boot with a simple wave of the foot.

The Kuga of old was renowned for its drivability, but the added size of the new one seems to have compromised its manoeuvrability a touch. Nevertheless, for a high-riding 4x4 it offers plenty of feedback through the steering. There’s also a good amount of road grip, and four-wheel-drive variants offer excellent traction. Considering it lacks excitability to some degree, it inspires plenty of confidence and is enjoyable to weave through the back streets.

Ford offers either a 1.5 litre petrol or a 2.0 litre diesel engine. Pick of the petrols is the 1.5 litre 148bhp. This model can shift at a reasonable speed considering its size, with a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds, and it’s no slouch on fuel economy either, giving you 45.6mpg. However, the relatively high CO2 emission levels mean the 1.5 could leave you paying a fairly sizeable annual road tax bill. As for the new EcoBoost petrol engine, it reduces emissions by 26% over the petrol engine it replaced. Considering the diesels, you best bet for decent economy combined with good performance is the 161bhp, however it can be a little loud at times.

Here’s a brief history of the Ford Kuga, dating back to when it first went on sale in 2008.

In the first half of 2008, Ford released the Kuga Zetec and Titanium models in Europe, with a view to targeting the premium SUV market.
In the second half of 2008, it was speculated that Ford was considering bringing the Kuga to market in the US.
In late 2009, it was leaked by the media that Ford would plan to build the Kuga at its plant in Louisville, Kentucky.
Ford announced in May 2010 that it would build hybrid models at a plant in Valencia, Spain and likely offer a hybrid option of both the Kuga and Escape.
In 2010, Ford announced the discontinuation of the second-generation Escape in the US in anticipation of the new Kuga filling its spot.
In 2011, the Kuga went to market in Japan, South Africa and New Zealand.
In 2012, the Kuga was released into the Australian market.
The new-look Kuga formed the basis of the 2013 Ford Escape sold in the US.
2015 was the Kuga’s best year for European sales, with Ford selling more than 102,000 cars across the continent.

What should I look for when buying a used Kuga?

Be on the look out for blue smoke emitting from the exhaust when starting up as this could be an indication of an issue with the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valves, which will have stopped sending the gases back to the engine for more efficiency and instead releasing them into the atmosphere.
Listen closely to the engine while idling. If you hear a rattling sound or the idle revs are inconsistent, the car most likely has a problem with the fuel injectors.
A common issue with the Kuga is the door seals wearing out. If when driving you hear the door making a creaking sound, this is probably what’s causing it. These will need to be replaced altogether.
If there is a rattling coming from the gearstick, it probably means that it or the gator is worn, which is fairly common problem with Kugas. To fix this, the trim around the gearstick will need to be replaced.
If, on the diesel model, the engine warning light flashes, then there might be a problem with the diesel particulate filter that could cause excessive emissions. A new filter will be needed to resolve the problem.
Some Kuga customers have complained about the rear door striker rubbing and generating a knocking sound. Listen out on your test drive but this should be an easy fix with some grease.
Check the wiper blades work well and don’t grease up the windscreen, which has been an issue with some Kugas in the past.
