Expert Opinion

A crossover SUV in the same vein as the Skoda Yeti, Nissan Juke and Kia Sportage, the Vauxhall Mokka mixes rugged styling with road car complacency. And, while the initial response to its 2012 launch weren't overly favourable, it has since improved dramatically. The diesel engines are the best options here, and the largest - 1.7 litres - delivers a capable and comfortable drive. Refinement is good, as is the ride, while handling is light and responsive. Along with a decent sized cabin and 365 litre boot, the Mokka is a satisfying and practical car, which is strong competition to the established leaders in the crossover class.

Following just behind the Nissan Juke, the Vauxhall Mokka was one of the earliest small crossovers and really helped to take advantage of this segment, which has continued to rise in popularity. Featuring chunky styling combined with good equipment levels and a practical interior, it didn’t take long for models to fly out of showrooms.

Today, the Mokka is a bolder-looking model than ever, which paves the way with a new design direction for Vauxhall, while getting plenty of technology that you’d normally only expect to find in far more expensive cars.

Why buy a used Mokka?

Whether you’re looking at a used Mokka or the latest example, style is something you’re guaranteed. Coming with the much-admired chunky SUV styling that’s really important in this class. The latest second-generation car really takes that up a notch, with its concept car-like styling really appealing. It was also the first Vauxhall to have a ‘Vizor’ – which sees the brand’s badge and headlights all wrapped behind one glass panel, and is certainly very stylish.

Though neither generation of Mokka leads the way when it comes to spaciousness, if you’re considering one because a typical supermini (like Vauxhall’s own Corsa or a Ford Fiesta) is just too small, it will really impress. The boot is a decent size, while rear seat space is far better too. You also have the added bonus of the raised ride height, which makes getting in and out of the car easier, and also better if you’re trying to get children in and out of their seats too.

Choice is also key to the Vauxhall Mokka’s appeal, which first stems from the sheer number you’ll see for sale thanks to its continued popularity. There’s also a broad range of trim levels and engine options available, from efficient diesel models through to four-wheel-drive, which was purely found on the first generation car. Meanwhile if you choose the latest model, you can even go electric with the Mokka-e, bringing a 201-mile range and impressively low running costs.

If you simply want to get from a-to-b in the most hassle-free way possible, the Mokka is also a great choice. Though it’s not as fun as other models in its class, that’s not always important, and instead this Vauxhall’s light controls, great visibility and easy manoeuvrability will mean it will slot quite easily into the life of many buyers.

Here’s a brief history of the Vauxhall Mokka, since its original launch back in 2012.

Vauxhall pulled the wraps off the Mokka in January 2012, being one of the first compact crossovers to go on sale. It would reach showrooms later in the year.
In 2016 the Mokka became the Mokka X as part of a mid-life update. Gaining more modern styling, additional technology and a new 1.4-litre engine, it really helped to expand the Mokka’s appeal further.
A value-packed Griffin version was launched in 2019 to help give the Mokka X a final push before it was discontinued later in the year.
The Mokka would be relaunched in 2021 – note the lack of ‘X’ in its name. A pivotal model for Vauxhall, it showed off the brand’s new design language, bold interior concept and also saw the introduction of the electric Mokka-e to expand the firm’s EV range.

What should I look for when buying a used Mokka?

Earlier cars have cheaper interior trim that isn’t ideal when being used as a family car, so look out for any signs of excessive wear, missing trim, etc.
