Why buy a sports car?

Owning a sports car may be a luxury, but it is also one of life's more exciting pleasures. Their purpose is to be exhilarating, dynamic and stylish lords of the road but many offer practicality too. Of course, at the other end of the spectrum are the Porsches, Maseratis and Ferraris of the world oozing style, power and status.

Thanks to a number of manufacturers offering sport variations alongside their standard models, there is a wide choice of affordable sports cars. Options like the Honda CR-Z and Mazda MX-5 offer maximum fun and excitement for minimum cost. Buying a used sports car is a further step towards ensuring an excellent price.

Buying a second hand sports car is an excellent way of finding a bargain, but also of getting your hands on those hard to come-by, one-of-a-kind cars. Which is, after all, what a sports car should be.

Which sports car should I buy?

Once you've made the decision to buy a sports car there are a number of factors you can consider to help shrink your options. A starting point is whether you want a coupe or convertible. Convertibles are excellent when the sun is out, but think about where you will be using it - if it's sunny one day every six months, is it worth the expense? Convertibles aren't as secure as their fixed-roofed siblings and generally cost a little more to insure. So it's best if you can put it in your garage if you do go for the top-down experience.

Sports cars are among the most stylish on the roads. But consider that a used sports car for sale today may not be 'in fashion' if and when you decide to sell it. Sports cars do hold their value well, which means that buying on the used market may not get you as big a discount as with some other models. When it comes to resale however, you you're less likely to suffer large depreciation.

What should I look for when buying sports cars?

Some sports cars are very expensive, not just to buy but to run, insure and repair especially if you are looking for a top marque. So your budget will be a key consideration. Exotic models that are going being offered at a low price are likely to have a high mileage and will need to be carefully checked - make sure it has a full service history and use the AA Cars free history check. You don't want to buy your dream car only for it to turn into a nightmare of repairs.

If this is your first sports car, you'll find they are very different to your average car. Pay special attention to things like driving position, visibility, boot space, and even whether you can enter and exit the car easily. Although these may sound like minor points, they can be far removed from what you're normally used to, and can affect what sort of car you will be comfortable in. For example, some hard-top convertibles use a lot of space to accommodate the folded roof - space that for a saloon would give you luggage capacity.

Performance is key - if not the main aspect - to anyone buying a used sports car. But there are specific things that you should consider in this category. Do you want raw power at the expense of everything else? Or is comfort and a smooth ride more important?

Many sports cars are rear wheel drive - more than in any other car class - which offers drivers sharp steering and handling, demanding a slightly different driving style especially on slippery surfaces. If you want the positive drive but not the over-steer of a rear wheel drive, look for a front wheel drive, or even a four-wheel drive vehicle. Look out for stability control systems (ESC), which are fitted to most modern cars, as this makes a big difference in driving stability.
