Expert Opinion

Calling the Range Rover Evoque the smallest, most fuel efficient Land Rover available - which it is - somewhat unfairly implies that it isn't a hulking brute of a car - which it also is. Except that it comes in a squashed, stocky package, which also qualifies it as arguably the most stylish Land Rover in the range. On the road it is pure adrenaline, taking just seven seconds to hit 60mph from standstill in the base model 2.0 Si4 turbocharged petrol model, and handling like the smaller, sportier cars that it takes its styling cues from. Inside the cabin there is an array of gadgets and buttons to entertain and to comfort, while the 575 litre boot (extended to 1,445 litres with seats down), in the five door model ensures maximum practicality. Off road it doesn't perform as well as some of its brothers do, but on the road there are few compact SUVs - or large SUVs for that matter - which can match it.

Few cars are quite so coveted as a Range Rover, so it’s easy to see why Land Rover wanted to expand its range of SUVs, first with the addition of a more dynamic ‘Sport’ in 2005, and then in 2011 with the addition of the Evoque – a sleek, more compact SUV that offered something more affordable. It’s proven a huge hit for the firm and is now its best-selling car.

A second-generation model reached showrooms in 2019, packing more in the way of technology and a higher-quality interior, though retaining similar styling to the original.

Why buy a used Range Rover Evoque?

The main reason you’ll want to buy the Evoque is for the way it looks. Whether you’re choosing the latest model or the first generation, both stand out on the road like few cars in this class can manage, while plenty of personalisation means there’s a good chance you’ll find an Evoque in the spec you like on the used market. The second-generation car – despite sharing similar looks to the original – is all-new, with styling details such as pop-out door handles and ‘scrolling’ indicators at the front and rear giving it a particularly upmarket look.

It’s a similar story on the interior, with all versions bar the entry-level ‘Evoque’ trim level coming with leather seats, while the quality throughout is superb. It certainly doesn’t feel like the ‘cheapest’ Range Rover, that’s for sure, while the latest model comes with an impressive 10-inch touchscreen system as standard, with higher-spec versions benefiting from digital dials, too.

Land Rover has also ensured it remains seriously capable off-road, too. Though you might not regularly use this greater capability, it’s useful to know it’s there when needed, not least in winter. The majority of used examples will be four-wheel-drive, though Land Rover does offer front-wheel-drive if you think that additional off-road capability is surplus to requirements.

The latest generation is also offered with a wide range of electrified powertrains, with only the front-wheel-drive D165 diesel not coming with some kind of electrical assistance. A P300e plug-in hybrid model is also available, offering up to 34 miles of driving purely on electricity, and enabling some impressively low running costs, especially if it’s plugged in as often as possible. It’s also one of the few hybrids that can be rapidly charged, which really helps to speed up charging times when you’re on the move.

So if you’re looking for a stylish, premium and elegant SUV, they really don’t come much better than the Range Rover Evoque.

Range Rover Evoque updates

Here’s a brief history of the Range Rover Evoque, which first arrived in 2011.

First previewed in 2008 as the Land Rover LRX concept, the production model – which arrived three years later – was hardly changed. It was available as both a three-door ‘Coupe’ and more practical five-door from launch.
The Evoque was updated in 2013, boasting a new nine-speed automatic gearbox, further driver assistance features and improved engine efficiency across the range.
A more powerful and higher-spec Autobiography Dynamic model was introduced in 2014, along with additional in-car connected services.
One of the most oddball moments in the Evoque’s lifetime came when Land Rover introduced a Convertible version in 2016.
A second-generation Evoque reached showrooms in 2019, packing electrified powertrains, a raft of new styling details and far more in the way of technology than its predecessor.

What should I look for when buying a used Range Rover Evoque?

Non-engine electrics are the most common problems, so check everything works as it should, such as the touchscreen heated seats and electric sunblinds.
Gearboxes can be troublesome, so check it’s smooth and linear on your test drive.
Reversing cameras can be troublesome, so check they’re working as intended.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) can cause headaches on diesel models that only do short trips. Look out for any oil contamination under the bonnet and also that no DPF lights are present on the dashboard.
