Another Volkswagen mainstay, five generations of Polo have been mint additions to the UK market since 1975. Internally, there's little to choose between the Polo and Golf. Where the two differ is in size: it’s best to think of the Polo as a younger brother of its famous counterpart, younger AND cheaper. The Polo is cheaper to buy and run and sometimes a little nippier than the Golf, but no less able on long journeys. In fact, consider the Polo Bluemotion, free to tax and, incredibly, able to run at over 80mpg! The MKV Polo features VW’s lovely ergonomic styling and excellent build quality. Keenest eyes should look out for the interesting CrossPolo.

The Volkswagen Polo has been a consistently top performing and popular car over its long history.

Here's a short history of the VW Polo, dating right back to 1975, when the first Polo was launched.

The VW Polo was launched in mainland Europe in 1975 and was originally a rebadged Audi 50. The Polo however, was cheaper and more basic than the Audi, which was withdrawn in 1978 due to poor sales.
By 1979, following considerable success, the 500,000th Polo was manufactured.
The Polo Mark II was launched in 1981, boasting a new body style and a sheer rear window. This new model was the first to be classed as a supermini and so shared a market with the likes of the Austin Metro, Ford Fiesta and Citroën Visa.
Following considerable success in the UK the millionth Polo is produced in 1983.
In 1994 the Polo Mark III was launched and was available as either a 3 or 5-door hatchback - the first European manufactured car to offer four doors in this class.
The Polo Mark IV was revealed in September 2001 and eventually went on sale in 2002.
At the Geneva Motor Show in 2009 the Polo Mark V was launched and subsequently won European Car of the Year in 2010. That same year the Polo was named World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show and the What Car? Supermini of the Year.

What should I look for when buying a used Polo?

Make sure to carry out a shrewd inspection of the car's interior as well as exterior, being mindful for things like corrosion, rust and cheap, last-minute patching up on any Polo.
Have a dig around under the bonnet checking the cam belt and ignition coil packs. The former should be changed within 4 years or 80,000 miles on petrol engines while if the ignition coil packs are faulty, an amber management light will come on with the ignition and then turn off.
There are two Polo servicing programmes, so make sure you know the difference between them to properly asses a potential buy. The VW Longlife programme offers servicing at irregular intervals to 20,000 miles on petrol engines or 30,000 miles on diesels and the Time and Distance servicing programme is every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
Check the car's dashboard for anything out of the ordinary - something as simple as an airbag light can mean a software malfunction and could necessitate an electronic diagnostics test and update - something which has been flagged up with other Polos.
Make sure you take it out for a spin so you can check the drive as well as the feel of the brakes and the clutch. If the clutch feels heavy it could mean the pedal box needs to be replaced, but it could also be that the clutch needs to be replaced.
Polos are reliable, well-built cars, so it's likely you'll be able to spot a major problem with one quite easily. That said, you should always ensure you are thorough with your checks and entirely confident with your decision.
