The Fiat 500 doesn't hang around for long on our forecourts! It's been a very popular new car since launch in 2008, and is just as popular as a used car now. The 500 is not only cute and funky, frugal and fun, it also makes great financial sense as it depreciates in value extremely slowly for a small car. Look out for ultra-efficient TwinAir petrol or MultiJet turbodiesel engines in the trim level of your choice. Its 'must have' looks, reliability, character and fuel efficiency, have all helped to ensure its residual values are kept high, which is good news for owners.

Like the new generation Mini and VW Beetle, the Fiat 500 is a retro throwback; a modernisation of the once supremely popular Italian city car which stopped production in 1975.

As with those two other cars, the modernisation is almost as popular as the model on which is it based, mixing a sleek, retro design with low running costs. A car ideal for city driving, it is easy to see why it has proved so popular with drivers of all ages.

Why buy a used 500?

The new Fiat 500 was first unveiled on the 50th anniversary of the very first Nuova 500, and has since found considerable popularity among people looking for a funky, frugal city car.

One of its biggest selling points is undoubtedly its design. Retro and quirky, it is part fashion accessory, part car, and is surprisingly faithful to the original 500 it is based on. Contrastingly to the old model however, the new 500 fits a decent amount of space into a very small frame.

Having managed to pack in adequate room for four people, Fiat have managed to find space for a 185 litre boot, which while not being very large, is a decent size for its class. The interior continues the chic design, using a choice of colours to liven the dashboard. Apart from the splash of colour the layout is kept relatively simple, favouring functionality over frivolousness.

Designed for inner city use, the Fiat 500 isn't made with much power in mind. Though, the 1.2 litre model makes for good value for money considering the relative get up and go it does have. With improved power steering and suspension on the later generation models, the 500 offers a comfortable ride which gives just enough excitement for the average city driver.

Fiat 500s hold their value very well, and with low upkeep costs, it is a car which boasts very little outlay in terms of ownership. Run costs are affordable, particularly the TwinAir model, which has CO2 emissions under the 100g/km threshold, making it road tax exempt. Although the TwinAir is said to return around 70mpg, reports have revealed the truth is closer to the high forties, but overall it is an economic car to run.

Like the original back in the 50s, the modern Fiat 500 has found instant success as a stylish city car.

Here's a brief overview of the Fiat 500's history, starting from its launch in 2007.

In 2007, to mark the 50th anniversary of the very first Nuova 500 being manufactured, the new Fiat 500 was launched.
The 500 was instantly successful, and three weeks after the 500's launch the entire year's production - 58,000 - had sold out.
The launch show was a lavish and large event held in Turin and featured performances by Lauryn Hill, and reproduced iconic scenes from the 60s.
That same year the Fiat 500 was named Car of the Year by CAR Magazine, and Best City Car by Top Gear.
In 2008 the 500 was named European Car of the Year.
Over the subsequent years a number of special edition 500 models were produced, such as the Abarth 500 in 2008, which is a performance turbocharged model, a Barbie version, and the 500 by Gucci in 2011.
In 2009 a soft-top cabriolet called the 500C was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show which featured the same engine, but came with a start/stop system in place.

What should I look for when buying a used 500?

The Fiat 500 is a city car, so a low mileage means a lot more wear and tear than it would on one designed for country driving. Check for tyres worn by low speed steering, and things like damaged alloys and dented floors.
Examine the outside of the car - check for any signs of rust, corrosion or poor repair work. Any out of place panels or paint work could indicate that there has been previous damage to the car.
Coming in a number of fashionable colours, there is a danger than if you buy something garish when it is in fashion, you might have trouble when it comes to selling it because it is out of fashion.
500s manufactured after 2010 have a better suspension system, so for any car dating before then, make sure to test the suspension by pushing down on the bumpers and noting any bouncing (the more bouncing the worse condition the shocks are in).
Following a deal with BSM, a number of used 500s were previously used as by driving instructor, so make sure to check for worn clutches and evidence of damaging driving by learners.
