About Mercedes A Class

When it first came out 15 years ago the Mercedes A Class was a top end MPV-style hatchback. But after struggling to find its feet in a difficult class, it has reimagined itself as a smart and stylish sporty hatchback.

It might be the most affordable, family-friendly option in the Mercedes family, but within the hatchback market it holds a similar place to its manufacturer's other offerings: right at the top end.

Why buy a used A Class?

The Mercedes A Class has come a long way since first being released 15 years ago. Today it sits at the very top of the hatchback class, boasting a high quality interior, comfortable ride and some good engines.

Like its siblings in the Mercedes range, the A Class shines first and foremost for its elegance and class. The early models are boxy and share more in common with the fast outdated MPV class, but the most recent iteration is sharp, sleek and aerodynamic. With the typical Mercedes grille, it stands shoulder to shoulder with some its rivals like the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.

The A Class interior is impressive and takes much from its contemporaries in the high end hatchback class. In the most recent models sports seats and a sleek steering wheel add a touch of glamour, while a total load space of over 1,000 litres gives it surprising practicality, too.

On the road the A Class handles as well as any hatchback, with good grip and some power beneath the bonnet. However, with higher spec the wheels are larger and suspension a little stiffer, so if you're after a smooth ride it's best to stick to the entry level models.

Best of the engines is the A180 CDI diesel, which offers a mix of efficiency, power and comfort. On average it offers a healthy 92g/km CO2 emissions and over 78mpg – all the while managing 0-100mph in under 10 seconds. At the top of the range is the A250, which is easily one of the best hot hatches available on the market today. Offering 211bhp and a nippy 0-100mph speed of a little over six seconds, it gives all others in the market a run for their money.

While it might not be quite as much as an all rounder as the BMW 1 Series, the A Class has come on leaps and bounds in the last half decade. With its sleek style, comfortable ride and sporty performance it's a strong contender in the premium hatchback market.

A Class updates

Mercedes A Class

Since first being released in 1997 the A Class has come a long way.

Here's a short history of the Mercedes A Class, beginning in 1997.
  • In 1997 the first Mercedes A Class was released at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a five door hatchback.
  • The A Class received a facelift in 2001, which included some changes to the front and rear bumper. The new model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
  • An experimental version of the A Class – the F Cell – was showcased in 2002. The five door F Cell was powered by an electric motor and a hydrogen fuel cell.
  • The second generation A Class was released in 2004 and included better safety features, an improved handling system and a number of new engines.
  • In 2008 the A Class received another facelift. New bumpers and headlights were introduced, as well as a new five door saloon and three door coupe version.
  • A limited batch of special edition A Class cars were released in 2008 and featured a BlueEfficiency package and a number of interior features.
  • The A Class E-CELL, powered by electricity, was launched in a test batch at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

What should I look for when buying a used A Class?

What to look for in a Mercedes A Class
  • One of the most prevalent fault for A Class owners is that the seat belt adjusters can cause a rattle in the cabin at speed. This can be rectified relatively easily, however. Listen out for any rattling in the cabin when at high speeds.
  • Before taking your A Class out on the road inspect the car's exterior. Pay special attention to the rear springs. You'll have to kneel down to inspect it where it meets the suspension cup. Sometimes these have been known to break, which is easy to miss as the car is still drivable.
  • If the A Class you're looking at features an ACS (Auto clutch-less) gearbox, make sure when you are driving that the dashboard indicator shows the correct symbol for the relevant gears. If you see a “F” symbol persist it could mean there is a transmission problem.
  • Some A Classes have sliding folding roofs. If the one you're looking at has this make sure that it opens and closes properly. Some have reported faults with this, which can be costly to fix.
  • Check all interior upholstery and fittings. The A Class is an upmarket car, so it's worth making sure that it is in as good shape as possible. If you find one in good condition, however, it's an excellent investment.
