Expert Opinion

For over 20 years, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been synonymous with performance, elegance and luxury. Available as a dynamic Coupé, Saloon or Estate, the C-Class is powered by a V8 engine, but offers impressive fuel consumption as one of Mercedes-Benz’s BlueEFFICIENCY models, also featuring an ECO start/stop function to save fuel while queuing or coming to a stop.

About Mercedes C Class

A benchmark for refinement and maturity, the Mercedes C Class might not always offer the same life and excitement that its compact executive rivals do, but it certainly stands out as a beacon of quality.

A more compact option than its older cousins the E, S and SL Class, the C Class offers a mix of size, practicality, luxury and comfort. Now over twenty years old, it remains not only one of the most popular options in the Mercedes range, but in the full compact executive class.

Why buy a used C Class?

The Mercedes C Class was first launched in 1993 in order to offer a car that was smaller than the rest of the Mercedes range - something of an entry level option into the world of luxury executive vehicles. Along with the BMW 3 Series it sits at the top of a competitive market, but stands above its rivals in terms of its unmatched luxury and refinement.

The interior of any Mercedes is expected to impress, and the C Class is no exception. Across all generations the design and quality has been top notch, featuring expansive front seat space, top spec equipment and luxury finishings. The newest generation has brought in a number of features targeted at a younger audience - such as a sporting steering wheel and brushed aluminium - but the overall feel is still of refinement and maturity. Boot space is adequate, especially in the newest generation estate, which boasts 485 litres of space - a figure boosted to 1500 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

Engine options on the C Class are vast, and start from an entry level 1.8 litre petrol with either 154 or 201bhp that reaches 62mph in a competent nine seconds. On the other end of the scale is a V6 petrol engine - offered on models from 2001 onwards - which has an impressive 302bhp, and a very nimble 0-62mph time of just six seconds.

This however, doesn't necessarily mean that it is a particularly sporty car. The handling is very good, but steering isn't as responsive or lively as some others in its class. Newer models have seen this improved, and the better balance, fatter tyres and firm suspension of the Sport trim make for a car that aims to offer real excitement. The overall feel of the C Class ride is that of refinement though; its maturity and luxury shine brighter than its sportier aspirations.

As to be expected, the newer models are more fuel efficient than the earlier ones, and feature BlueEfficiency technology including stop/start as standard, and a considered approach toward fuel consumption. This means that the cost of running is good, especially in the diesels, the 168bhp of which can return 64.2 miles per gallon. Cars in this class are never going to be the most economical on the road, owing to their size and their performance, but the C Class is certainly one of the most reasonable. Along with good reliability, it is an affordable yet luxurious option.

C Class updates

Mercedes C Class

The C Class was launched to offer smaller Mercedes option than the existing E Class and S Class and SL Class.

Here's a short history of the Mercedes C Class, starting from its launch in 1993.
  • The 202 series Mercedes was launched in 1993, and was the first 'C Class' labelled range from the manufacturer. A slightly larger and more luxurious car than the Mercedes 190, it was part of a range which was designed to compete in a more compact class than the E Class, S Class and SL Class.
  • The first generation C Class was the very first passenger car to feature four-valve diesel engines, something still offered today.
  • In 2000 the second generation C Class was launched. This model came with many of the same engine options that its predecessor offered, but featured a sportier look and an improved safety rating.
  • That same year a coupé version of the C Class (CL 203) was launched, following the car's new sporty direction.
  • The W 204 C Class was introduced early in 2007. Slightly larger than the models coming before it, it was offered with four different trim options - AMG, Avantgarde, Classic and Elegance.
  • In 2007 the W204 C Class was named Top Gear Magazine's Executive Car of the Year, as well as Car of the Year by Wheels Magazine in Australia.
  • The C Class was given a facelift and redesign in 2011, featuring stop/start systems in order to improve efficiency.
  • Another redesign was carried out in 2013. The new models came with BlueEfficiency features to improve its economy, and a few aesthetic tweaks.

What should I look for when buying a used C Class?

What to look for in a Mercedes C Class
  • Inspect the exterior of the car for any signs of rust of corrosion, especially on and around the wheels - there have been complaints about corrosion on alloys in the past.
  • There have been reports of problems with the head gasket in the C Class. Check for any signs of oil dripping down the side of the engine, which could be a sign that the head gasket needs to be replaced.
  • Some C Classes have suffered from premature timing chain sprocket wear. Have a look under the bonnet for any noticeable wear, and when out on the road listen for any noises coming from the front of the engine, or from the car idling roughly.
  • Listen out for any noises or crashes coming from the car when driving over bumps as this could be a sign that the suspension might need replacing.
  • Electrical systems in the C Class have been known to fail. Check that all electrics are in working order, including the radio, windows and air conditioning.
  • C Classes have been known to be victims of clocking - where the car's mileage readout is reduced - so be wary of any very low reading. Make sure to look over the car's paperwork to see that there are no inconsistencies.
  • Well-built and reliable, C Classes are a good investment and offer good value for money. If you make sure to look out for some of these common faults you should be able to find one that will run for years.
